Physician Associate - Paediatrics - WVT employees only

Job Reference: 229-VW406-67

Wye Valley NHS Trust
229 Medical Staff General Surgery
£37,570 to £43,772 pa

Wye Valley NHS Trust is a member of an NHS Foundation Group with South Warwickshire NHS FT and the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust.

Located on the border with Wales in the shadow of the Black Mountains, we provide acute and community services across Herefordshire and into parts of Powys and run Hereford County Hospital and the community hospitals in Bromyard, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye.

We are a progressive and forward looking trust with ambitious plans to improve quality and integrate patient pathways through close collaborative working with our partners to deliver the quality of care we’d want for our family and friends.

More than 3,000 people work for the Trust – they tell us it’s a great place to work, blending the busyness of a DGH with the benefits of working in a beautiful rural and unspoilt county like Herefordshire.

The fact that we’re rural hasn’t hampered our ambitious plans to be the best we can. We’re a “fast follower” in the NHS Digital Clinical IT Exemplar programme, we’ve just signed a multi-million pound deal with Philips to ensure we have the latest radiology equipment and we’re in the process of having three new wards built.

We can offer a great work-life balance and have a fine tradition of working with staff to help them achieve their full potential.

Russell Hardy, Trust Chairman: “The strength of the Trust is its amazing staff; a great place to work, a great place to develop your career and a great place to reach your potential.”

Our values - Care, Accountability, Respect and Excellence - are at the heart of all we do. We believe in providing the right care in the right place at the right time…all the time.

Are you interested in an exciting opportunity to be part of a new initiative which will enhance our clinical model of care?

Wye Valley NHS Trust has successfully appointed Physician Associates (PAs) across the trust and is now delighted to announce our first substantive paediatric PA to join the Trust in developing a team of PAs to work together and within departments and mentor trainee Physician Associates.

Wye Valley NHS Trust is a provider of health care across Herefordshire bringing together acute and community services with an annual turnover of around £180 million and employing around 3,000 staff. The key principles of Wye Valley NHS Trust are to improve the health and wellbeing of the people we serve in Herefordshire and the surrounding areas. We aim to work across traditional boundaries to provide integrated care in order to deliver a standard of care we would want for ourselves, our families and friends.

The Trust’s improvement journey includes a number of developments related to delivery of improved clinical services and patient experience. Part of that journey includes exploring ways of delivering care through multi-disciplines. We have been actively engaged in supporting a programme to develop Physicians Associates and now have a team of eight Physician Associates working with our clinical teams. The paediatric Physician Associate is an important part of our Paediatric team and supports the clinical management of newborns, infants, children and young people, through assessment and treatment under the direction of our Consultants.

Our department offers first class paediatric medicine with a friendly team and delivers a comprehensive range of services. We have a consultant led and delivered service, with consultants on site 24 hours a day. Successful candidates can expect to learn and practice paediatrics with their medical and nursing colleagues in a friendly and well supervised environment. You will assess and examine children and young people (CYP), manage a specific caseload of patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment, whilst exercising a high level of professional judgment and expertise when delivering care. You will be supervised by a designated consultant and work alongside a highly-trained and committed team of doctors and nurses, working collaboratively with other members of the clinical team within the Trust’s policies and clinical guidelines.

It is expected that the Physician Associate will become involved in the activities of the Department, including review of inpatients, practical procedures and outpatient clinics. It would be envisaged that the role would be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee’s ability and interests.

The successful applicant will undergo an induction programme to help them adapt their skills and knowledge to the service, under the supervision of the Physician Associate training Consultant.

The post would suit a Physician Associate looking to work in a very exciting, very rewarding yet demanding environment. Quick thinking, flexible and thorough professionals will find the post to their liking. The post holder will be rostered to work 37.5 hours per week including evenings up till 9 pm and weekend shifts as required. There is no requirement to be on-call or to work night shifts. The shift pattern will be allocated a minimum of 4-6 weeks in advance.

The post as described in the attached Additional Information, can be adjusted to meet the specific interests of the Physician associate at interview. Provisional job plan is attached; this may be subject to change (Please see the Additional Information).

Interested applicants should contact Dr Ingrid du Rand (Lead Consultant for Physician Associates) for further information and an informal visit on 01432 364241 or email ; Dr Lesley Peers (Consultant Paediatrician) on 01432 364223 or email or Sam Maryosh , Lead PA on 01432 364241 or email
