Diabetes Nurse Specialist

We are looking for a Band 7 Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our team working at Warrington and Halton NHS Foundation Trust (WHH) which is comprised of 3 hospitals. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team with consultants, dieticians and other professions, the diabetes nursing team perform a crucial role in making a difference to patients with diabetes.

The diabetes service at WHH is a comprehensive acute service offering outpatient clinics specialising in:

    • Ante-natal care
    • Enhanced type 1 service for insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring
    • Structured education for type 1 and type 2 diabetes
    • Transition clinic for young adults
    • Specialist foot unit
    • Joint clinics for complex type 2 diabetes
    • Nurse-led clinics for young adults, type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes

Post-holders will also need to support patients with diabetes on inpatient wards, (these can be elective and non-elective patients) based on an e-referral system ensuring timely discharges are achieved and links with community diabetes teams to facilitate this. The DSN will also have a significant role to play in patient/carer and staff education and training. The post-holder will be required to cover any of the other sites in the event of an emergency though will be based at 1 site.

Applicants should be enthusiastic, motivated and passionate about improving diabetes care for patients and should come with a minimum of 3 years post registration experience.


    • RGN level 1, minimum 3 years post registration and a Non- Medical Prescriber (or willing to undertake training)
    • Knowledge and practice of diabetes nursing for inpatients and outpatients
    • Has understanding of the National Service Framework for Diabetes
    • Some knowledge of technologies in diabetes care

All posts are subject to NHS Employment Check Standards including a DBS check, if applicable. Depending on the classification of the post, in-line with DBS guidelines, a Standard or Enhanced disclosure will be required which may include a check of the ‘Vulnerable Adults List’, the ‘Children’s List’ and/or the Independent Safeguarding Authorities (ISA’s) barred lists.

A charge of £39 (Standard) or £60 (Enhanced) will be made by the successful candidate which will be deducted from the first 3 months’ salary. In addition to this, you will also be required to re-pay any future costs that may arise in relation to DBS fees.

NB. Current employees of Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who have had a satisfactory DBS check, carried out by this Trust during the last 3 years, will not be required to undertake a new one. Where staff have not had a check (classification appropriate to the post offered) within the last 3 years, they will be required to undertake and pay for this, as per the arrangements above.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
