Consultant General Anaesthetist (two posts)

Choose North Devon for a rewarding clinical career balanced with the outdoors life!

Applications are invited for two Consultant General Anaesthetist posts at North Devon District Hospital due to an expansion of the Anaesthesia and Critical Care Services. These posts are offered on a whole-time basis (10.25PA) but suitably-qualified applicants who are unable to work full-time will be considered.

Post 1 is for a general anaesthetist with interests in general surgery (including major colorectal) and obstetrics. Other specialist interests may be considered.

Post 2 is for a general anaesthetist with interests in trauma and day case anaesthesia as well as pre-operative assessment. Other specialist interests may be considered.

The successful applicants will join an expanding team of 21 consultants, 8 associate specialists, 5 specialty grades, 2 fellows, 2 Trust Doctors, 11 core trainees and admin staff to provide comprehensive anaesthesia and critical care services for the population of North Devon.

Whilst specialist interests are strongly encouraged, our clinicians also maintain a broad spectrum of clinical skills and have a work-life balance like nowhere else. The acute hospital is big enough to provide real opportunities for leadership and innovation, yet small enough to make prompt, effective change a reality.

With the hospital being nestled between miles of golden beaches and Exmoor National Park, you’ll find our off duty staff out surfing, kite surfing, walking, cycling, horse riding and generally enjoying the amazing scenery that Devon has to offer.

We perform highly against clinical standards and have a proven track record of staff satisfaction, enabling our doctors to focus on giving great care to patients.

So, if you would like to combine a challenging clinical career with an outdoor life in North Devon, come and join us (see the video link ‘What’s it like working at NDHT’ for more details).

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
