The practical aspects of the training will be delivered at Lincoln County Hospital.

The training is for a three year period starting September 2019 to August 2022. Upon completion, it is expected that there will be an opportunity to apply for a permanent post at the end of this period.

What’s a Degree Apprenticeship…...

Degree apprenticeships are a new type of programme offered by some employers and universities. Whilst employed, students can achieve a full bachelor's or master's degree as part of their apprenticeship, funded by the employer.

The programmes are developed by employers, universities, and professional bodies working in partnership, and offer a fantastic opportunity for students to earn and learn without the debt from the traditional university route.

Degree apprenticeships combine working with studying part-time at a university. Apprentices are employed throughout the programme, and spend part of their time at university and the rest with their employer.

About the Department…

Radiotherapy Physics is one of the Healthcare Science disciplines at Lincoln County Hospital. It provides a therapy service using complex equipment and software for the treatment of cancer. Over the last few years the department has had all new systems and we are looking to enhance the support provided for these systems through the new training schemes developed by the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS).

Staffing in Radiotherapy is a mix of physicists, clinical technologists (dosimetrists), engineers, radiographers, consultant oncologists and clerical staff working as a multidisciplinary team. The equipment includes a 4D CT scanner, three high energy linacs fitted with kilovoltage imaging which can be interlaced with the therapy radiation and an optical system for surface monitoring and motion management during treatments. We provide high and low dose rate brachytherapy which have their own planning systems. Our comprehensive quality assurance covers all the equipment and software and we are looking at working to the level of the new BS70000 standard.

We are keen to use the capabilities of all the new equipment to the full and in line with the NHS England Vision 2014-24. We are continuing to build the team which will respond to the challenges ahead.
