A brand new exciting opportunity has become available for a Consultant Psychiatrist / Medical Director to join our team.


The Opportunity


An exciting opportunity has arisen as a full time Medical Director / Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Colchester working on Ramsey Ward, a new high dependency inpatient rehabilitation service for men.


Cygnet Hospital Colchester, formerly known as Fairview Hospital, is a 57 bed service providing a range of intensive support and rehabilitation services for men with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders or mental health needs, and women with a diagnosis of personality disorder and complex mental health needs.


The Specifics


As the Medical Director, you would be responsible for:


  • Chairing medical advisory committee meetings
  • Attending hospital board and management meetings and report on appraisals, clinical performance and medical staffing issues
  • Liaising between medical staff and hospital board in respect of practicing privileges/consultant appointments
  • Ensuring each doctor has an annual appraisal as appropriate and allocate appraisers as necessary
  • Liaising with Responsible Officer and Group Medical Director in respect of concerns about fitness to practice issues for medical staff


As the Consultant Psychiatrist, you would be responsible for:


  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team which contains a wide range of professional disciplines and to work collaboratively with the NHS clinicians and commissioners who contract services from the hospital
  • Delegate the assessment and delivery of services to members of the multi-disciplinary team, while closely supervising the activities of the team as they follow this model

In this role you will:


  • Have medical responsibility for patients on Ramsey Unit
  • Streamline and manage the admissions and discharges for the most efficient use of beds at the hospital
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT); working collaboratively with Consultant Psychiatrists, Doctors, other AHPs on site NHS clinicians and commissioners who contract services from the hospital
  • Working in close collaboration with service users and multidisciplinary teams to produce effective treatment plans for service users
  • To have daily handovers from the nursing staff as well as all other appropriate meetings including MDT meetings, CPAs, Tribunals and Managers’ hearings
  • Participate in the Consultant on-call rota


Are you the successful candidate we are looking for?


  • Current experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist, GMC registration, Section 12 Approval and AC Status
  • Experience and knowledge of General Adult and rehabilitation psychiatry
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge of Mental Health Legislation
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management principles
  • Proven record of Continued Professional Development (CPD)
  • Excellent communication skills
