Pharmacy Technician

Job Reference: 188-OTH1070

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
Southampton General Hospital, Southampton
£21,089 - £23,761 pa

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a registered pharmacy technician to come and join our progressive team. Full time or part time and/ or job share roles will be considered.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is one of the largest teaching hospitals on the south coast; a dynamic and forward thinking organisation, with clear vision. We provide hospital services to 1.3 million people living in Southampton and south Hampshire, plus specialist medical, cardiac, neurosciences and paediatric services to more than 3 million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands.

Your role will predominantly be at ward level working closely with a range of professionals and our extensive pharmacist team. Your work will include:

    • Initiating the medicines reconciliation process.

    • Ensuring our patients have sufficient supplies of medicines for their hospital stay and beyond.

    • Counselling and educating patients on their medicines

    • Playing an important and proactive role in the discharge process to facilitate safe and effective discharge.

    • Extended hours and weekend working to support patient care

If you have the enthusiasm and are committed to team working with good communication skills, we can provide additional training and development to support you. We have a strong focus on developing our technicians with in-house competencies, exposure to management for junior staff and leadership skills. The medicines management team consists of nearly 40 technicians of varying grades, and 5 support workers.

As a department we have an ethos for continuing professional development and training for all our staff. The post-holder will be required to undertake further study in:

    • Support with in-house competencies

    • Medicines Management (accredited)

    • Patient counselling

    • Individual personal development plans

We can provide the opportunity to experience other pharmacy department specialities i.e. aseptics, training, IT, dispensary or clinical trials. If you are keen to learn more about key procedures or specialities within the hospital then this can be arranged. For those looking for a managerial career, we are a large department with a track record in enhancing technician’s leadership qualities, and we have a number of technicians who manage their own services.

The department is moving towards 7 day working. All staff are required to contribute to extended hours, weekend and bank holidays as part of core hours. Weekend working will be 1 weekend in 6 and in addition no more than a 1 in 5 late night commitment unless specifically agreed on appointment.

UHS, rated ‘Good’ by the CQC, is one of England's largest acute teaching trusts. In the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care.

The closing date for applicants is the 29 May.

The interview date for candidates is the 18 June.
