The Role

Trust Doctor - Urology Duties: Monday–Friday 9am–5pm


On calls: Monday–Friday 5pm-10pm


On calls: Saturday and Sunday 8am–12pm (1:4)




An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Urology department at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAH). The department offers an active endourology service with flexible ureteroscopies and laser stone fragmentation and PCNLs. PAH’s future vision encompasses development of a HoLEP service in addition to developing our female urology service. The Urology service at PAH is provided across The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow and St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping sites; both based in Essex within a short walk to their respective Town Centres; Harlow Town Centre is currently undergoing a vast redevelopment and both sites have quick and easy transport links directly into London. PAH prides itself on its investment in staff both in terms of developing career skills but also its commitment to staff health and wellbeing.


The Urology workforce at PAH has recently undergone a number of changes with Consultants bringing expertise in a number of areas such as Andrology, Female Urology, Uro-oncology and Stones. The service is being delivered by 6 Urology Consultants, 4 Trust Doctors (Registrar Level) and a team of Junior Doctors.


The post will serve to provide efficient advice and treatment to a variety of patients presenting with urological problems under the supervision of the Consultant Urologist. The post holder will provide inpatient ward care; expected to undertake weekly ward rounds on a rotational basis with the middle grades team; carry out theatre sessions in both main theatres and day surgery, provide clinics and other clinical activities such as Flexible Cystoscopies, Lithotripsy and TRUS biopsies. There are also additional duties within the service and as such, the post holder will be expected to cover Telephone clinics, to take part in audit activities and to be involved in teaching and training the Urology junior doctors.


For this role the successful person will need: Compassion towards patient care and be willing to support service delivery development. You have the ability to work and communicate across the Multi-Disciplinary Team, sharing knowledge and experience to strengthen core competences. You must have full GMC registration with license to practice. You can provide evidence of achievement of Foundation Competences or equivalent in surgical specialties. You have broad experience in urology and also experience of Cystoscopy, TRUS Biopsy and Prostate Follow ups.


Full Time post, Rota orientated – typically 40 hours per week + out of hours supplement 50%. Normal Working Day / On Call Duties include weekends and public holidays, 1:4 on- call.
