An excellent opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced Orthoptist to join the innovative and diverse Ophthalmology Department at North Devon District Hospital. Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated candidates to join our friendly and dynamic team of Orthoptists to work in this busy and expanding service.

The successful candidate will join our team of 6 Orthoptists working alongside 5 Orthoptic Assistants, 4 Optometrists and 5 consultant Ophthalmologists based at North Devon District Hospital.

In addition to overseeing and developing the Orthoptic Led Glaucoma service the post holder will be required to work in core Orthoptic adult and paediatric services. The post holder will spend a significant amount of time working alongside 3 Orthoptic colleagues, who work in an extended role capacity, supporting the glaucoma service.

The Orthoptic department currently provides general adult and paediatric clinics including patients from eye casualty, secondary vision screening and special school screening.

In an extended role capacity we currently support/work in the following clinics:

Dystonia/Botox, JIA, AMD, Glaucoma Monitoring and fast track clinics for new glaucoma patients. There will be opportunities to participate in other extended roles depending on experience and service requirements.

The Orthoptic service is provided at the acute hospital base and several community hospital locations therefore the post holder must be able to travel.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for an Orthoptist, with relevant experience, to take on a Lead position enabling the post holder to develop the role and the service. Although this is a band 7 post there is a potential opportunity for appointment at a band 6 developmental role for suitably qualified and experienced candidates. The successful candidate appointed into a developmental role will be appointed at Band 6 moving to Band 7 on completion of competencies set by the manager and the Lead Glaucoma Ophthalmologist.

Professional development is encouraged and full participation is required in clinical audit, clinical governance sessions, dedicated journal clubs, departmental meetings and courses/ seminars relevant to the role.

Applicants must hold a degree or diploma in Orthoptics and be registered with the HCPC.
