Consultant Cardiologist (x2)

Fancy a change of scenery?

Applications are invited for two Consultant Cardiologist posts, based at North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple.

The successful applicant will provide cardiology services in North Devon, supported by a Cardiology Specialist Trainee and Staff Grade, heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation clinical nurse specialists in the acute and community setting, two arrhythmia care co-ordinators and other junior medical staff.

The post is offered on a whole-time basis (10PA) but suitably-qualified applicants who are unable to work full-time will be considered. We are committed to flexible working arrangements, including job sharing, and we will discuss these arrangements with any shortlisted candidates. We also have close links with our neighbouring Trust, the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, who can support the opportunity for sub specialisation. Time is allocated in the job plan to facilitate this, should the successful candidate wish to take up this offer.

The NDHT is one of the top-performing Trusts in the country, with an enviable patient satisfaction record, innovative service and cutting edge technology. Ranked fourth in the country for staff satisfaction we were recently chosen as one of the Health Service Journal’s best places to work.

North Devon provides a beautiful environment in which to live and work, with a wide variety of outdoor and cultural activities and excellent local schools. With National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the doorstep, the area offers an excellent quality of life.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council with licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion on the GMC’s Specialist Register (or expected entry within six months from the date of interview). NDHT has an undifferentiated medical take and although there is no requirement to participate in the medical on call arrangements, successful candidates can choose to join their General Physician colleagues on a 1 in 11 evening/weekend acute medicine ward round and overnight on calls.

For an informal discussion, prospective candidates are welcome to contact Dr Byron Theron (Lead Clinician) on (01271) 313943 or our Cardiologists Dr Chris Gibbs and Dr Dushen Tharmaratnam on 01271 314131/322369. Informal visits are welcomed and transport and accommodation costs will be covered.

So if you would like to combine an outdoor life in North Devon with a challenging clinical career, come and join us (see the video link ‘What’s it like working at NDHT’ for more details.)

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
