Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology

 

You will support the provision of both inpatient and outpatient diabetes and endocrinology care and the development and implementation of the integrated diabetes pathway with our Community partners and CCGs.

 

You will be one of five consultants, with team also comprising of 3 Specialist Nurses supporting the inpatient and outpatient service and links with a community nursing service with an expanding pump therapy service. There is collaborative working with obstetrics and Paediatrics by the way of joint diabetes antenatal and a transitional young adult clinic s to aid smooth transition to adult care. There is also a highly developed multidisciplinary foot care team that supervise the care of patients with diabetic foot complications. The successful applicant will be joining a highly motivated integrated group of diabetes care providers and will be expected to be an active contributor to the team.

 

The Endocrine service is highly developed in the management of all aspects glandular pathology and is a recognised centre for the sub-speciality of thyroidology with an active monthly thyroid MDT that deals with both benign and malignant thyroid pathology. There is a good link with the combined pituitary MDT at Kings College hospital, London with regular interaction with the neurosurgical and endocrine teams there ensuring seamless care and transfer of patients post-surgery back for local care. Dynamic endocrine investigations are performed in our ambulatory care units at each site and there are weekly endocrine team meetings to allow for discussion of results and formulation of management plans.

 

The department is active in clinical research with ongoing locally generated and multicentre studies and currently has a portfolio of 6 active clinical trials. The department is well supported by a team of research nurses enabling the expansion of the research portfolio should the applicant wish to be involved in clinical trials. Involvement in the training of medical students from Guys, Kings and St Thomas medical schools in addition to post graduate supervision will be an integral part of the post. These will ensure that there is ample opportunity for the applicant to develop the academic aspect of the post should this be a keen interest.

 

It was also recently announced that a new medical school, the first in the county, will be opening in two years. The school, which will offer 100 medical school places per year, is a game-changing opportunity and one which the two universities and Kent and Medway trusts have been working towards and hoping for over several years.

 

Kent is also home to some of the prettiest towns and villages in the UK. They often feature in top ten lists of places to live, such as Whitstable. The sweeping Kent countryside is beautiful enough on its own, and it also conceals hidden gems like market towns, picturesque villages and hidden hamlets.

 

Kent has some fantastic schools, and the links to the sea and cities mean days out for the whole family are never far away.

 

You can get a detached family home in East Kent for the price of a small flat in London, and excellent transport links from Kent will make it easy for you to keep in contact with family and friends. The M25 provides easy access to the main motorways in the United Kingdom.
