Training Programme Director for Scientist Training Programme


Band 8c (£59,090-71,243) usually starting at the minimum and progressing on an incremental scale), 1 full-time position, permanent.


This is one of four new senior clinical post in the National School of Healthcare Science, and an exciting opportunity to take a national leadership role in leading the Scientist Training Programme (STP) for NHS healthcare scientists. We have already recruited to three of the posts and to represent the breadth of healthcare science disciplines, applications are particularly welcomed from those working in the physical sciences.


Reporting directly to the Head of School, this post is for a senior highly visible national lead for STP training who will ensure that the programme is able to continue to deliver future senior NHS scientists with the necessary scientific, clinical, managerial and leadership competencies. You will be responsible for the continuing development, delivery, innovation and future strategic direction of this important programme of Health Education England’s National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS) across the scope of healthcare science specialties (currently 32).


You will have a good balance of relevant experience and skills gained by working in a Healthcare Science discipline within an NHS organisation for a number of years. You will be able to demonstrate strategic thinking and have proven ability to lead and manage scientists within the NHS. Evidence of driving change in a scientific department is desirable. You must be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the day to day working and challenges faced by senior trainee scientists working in the NHS. You should have experience of contributing to the STP and/or HSST training: This could include curriculum writing: setting assessments, training in the workplace or academic teaching.


You will need to ensure the maintenance of appropriate professional standards and the professional reputation of the school. A highly skilled communicator, you will be persuasive and able to negotiate and influence outcomes on behalf of the STP programme, the school and healthcare science in many arenas including within HEE and NHSE. You will need to facilitate effective networks including members of the healthcare science professions, patients and lay people, professional bodies, trainees, the Academy for Healthcare Science, and other key stakeholders across the healthcare system.


You will be educated to Masters level in an appropriate science; a post-graduate qualification in specialised scientific field, doctorate or equivalent (e.g. professional doctorate, FRCPath) would be highly desirable, but not essential.


A national or international publication profile is also desirable. Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development is essential as is registration as a clinical scientist with the HCPC.


The School is based in Birmingham but there will be a requirement for occasional travel and to stay at venues nationally so the post holder should expect to work flexibly as required.
