Surgery care group lead pharmacist

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated pharmacist to lead the specialist clinical pharmacy service to our surgery care group.


We provide services to elective surgery, major and complex trauma surgery as well as tertiary surgical services in specialist areas including breast and endocrine surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and urological surgery.


We have a great track record of developing extended roles of practice, this includes pharmacist independent prescribing, participating in antimicrobial stewardship ward rounds, and contributing to the development of innovative care pathways that have reduced the length of stay and increased the volume of day surgery undertaken.


We have a strong commitment to continuing professional development, audit and progressive roles for pharmacists. You will be supported by an established medicines management service, a team of specialist pharmacists and an experienced divisional pharmacist.


We require a pharmacist with sound knowledge of and experience in delivering pharmaceutical care to surgical patients. Strong team working skills are essential, as is the ability to integrate within a large team of pharmacists and the ward level multidisciplinary team.


The position will involve:


    • leading, managing and delivering the specialist clinical pharmacy service to the surgery care group


    • leading and contributing to clinical audit, quality improvement and service development


    • developing, implementing and reviewing policies and guidelines


    • attending clinical governance meetings


    • participating in antimicrobial stewardship ward rounds


    • teaching specialist surgical topics to junior pharmacists and within the multidisciplinary team


    • monitoring medicines expenditure, as well as implementing measures to control cost


Prescribing is an important aspect of this role. Every effort will be made to ensure that this training is provided as early as possible if the successful candidate is not yet an independent prescribing pharmacist.


The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the weekend working rota which could be up to 1 in 6 weekends in addition to a 1 in 5 extended hours commitment. We are willing to consider requests for alternative working patterns during the week.
