We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical or Forensic Psychologist to join our thriving, supportive Psychology department at Cygnet Hospital Stevenage in a Fixed Term Contract Maternity Cover for up to 12 months.


We are currently looking to employ a full time Clinical or Forensic Psychologist to cover maternity vacancy for up to 12 months at Cygnet Hospital Stevenage. The successful candidate will join the established Psychology department comprised of Principal Forensic Psychologists, a Clinical Psychologists, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Therapies, as well as assistant psychologists and psychology students.


The applicant will be an HCPC registered Clinical or Forensic Psychologist with experience in clinical forensic settings.


Cygnet Hospital Stevenage is a 87 bedded hospital with two medium and two low secure wards (male and female); we also offer services for men and women who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness, requiring assessment and stabilisation. The successful candidate will mainly offer psychology provision to our medium secure female ward.


Our goal at Cygnet is to deliver effective and evidenced based interventions that improve mental health and reduce risk. We offer an integrated care pathway for service users who are able to successfully move on to independent community living. This is further supported by our broad range of therapies which include: DBT, CBT for psychosis, Substance Misuse, Fire Setters Programme for Mentally Disordered Offenders, Sex Offenders Treatment Programme, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Analytical Therapy.


The successful candidate would work as a team psychologist within a multi-disciplinary team and would also play a role in training, supervision and service development according to skills, experience and areas of interest. As a ward psychologist you will apply skills and expertise in clinical and risk assessments, collaboratively develop formulations and care plans and deliver group and individual psychological interventions, and consult to the MDT.


Previous experience in Forensic settings as well as training in complex therapies such as Schema focused, Cognitive Analytical and DBT will be an advantage. The Role

  • Psychological assessments

  • Psychological therapy with individuals

  • Psychological therapy with groups

  • Consultation to teams

  • Provision of training and supervision

  • Service evaluation and clinical research, including dissemination of outcomes via conference presentations and publications

  • You will join an innovative and dynamic psychology team comprising a Head of Psychology (Clinical), four Clinical Psychologists, and two Assistant Psychologist. The skillset within the team includes specialist post-qualification training in CBT, CAT, EMDR and DBT. You will have access to supervision in these approaches, and will be supported to develop your own psychotherapeutic expertise. The Psychology team is committed to providing our service users with evidence-based care, to the highest of standards. We regularly evaluate our work and present outcomes at conferences.

  • Professional development is strongly encouraged. We have a generous training budget and interested candidates will be supported to undertake intensive DBT training, with a view to contributing to our comprehensive DBT programme. You will also be supported to undertake further training appropriate to your role e.g. forensic risk assessment.


About You


We are looking for a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist, either recently qualified or with a few years experience. Alternatively, you may be a registered Forensic Psychologist with substantial experience of working in a mental health setting. You will have an interest in working with people with a range of complex and co-occurring mental health needs, and have a positive approach to working with people presenting with a range of difficulties including: psychosis, emotionally unstable personality traits; deliberate self-harm; physical and verbal aggression; history of sexual offending; drug and alcohol problems.
