Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry

Job Reference: 262-A-18-49976

Employer:
Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
Department:
General Adult Psychiatry
Location:
Furness General Hospital, Barrow in Furness
Salary:
£77,913 - £105,042

We are the largest provider of NHS services across the County of Cumbria. Around 3500 staff operate 60 community and mental health services from over 20 main sites and many other premises shared with other health or community services such as GP surgeries. In any one year we see around one fifth of the population providing health care services to people in Cumbria, from newborn babies to care of the frail and elderly. Our services are organised into care groups, designed to put clinicians in control of decision making with patients and carers so that services are run by experts in the clinical area.

We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to join our medical workforce in South Cumbria. Thisis a full time post comprising of 10 PAs and will be split as follows: 7 PAs working in Dova Acute Psychiatric ward, and 3 in the Community Mental Health Assessment and Recovery Team (CMHART) in Furness. There will be an expectation for the post holder to split their SPAs (2.5) evenly across these components.

Dova ward is a 20 bed mixed sex acute adult psychiatric ward. It provides acute inpatient care to the adults living in the Furness and Millom localities of Cumbria, covering a population of approximately 110,000. It currently discharges on average 18 people a month.

The acute wards in the trust are committed to using lean principles to increase direct clinical contact for all professionals and flow through the system. Recent work involving lean principals and aimed at increasing the opportunity for one to one time with patients has significantly increased the efficiency of the wards. The outcome of this work is an excellent average bed occupancy of 85 to 90 percent across the acute wards. This has improved our safety and care and the project was shortlisted for a prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Award. This post is one of 2 consultants working on the ward, alongside SAS input.

Working in CMHART in Cumbria at this time –in a team serving the same population as Dova ward- would mean joining at an exciting time as we continue our transformation journey to ensure we are delivering recovery based services. This is a journey with a strong multidisciplinary focus, and consultants are seen as part of the leadership team in each CMHART. We are currently embeddingnew Expected Care Pathways, alongside our recently established EIP and Personality Disorder pathways. This post is one of 3 consultant psychiatrists working in the Furness CMHART.

The Trust is committed to medical education with robust teaching programmes and the opportunities for research. The Trust will arrange for successful candidates who are appropriately qualified to be awarded an Honorary Clinical Lectureship from one of our partner Medical Schools.

Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is a large integrated provider of community and mental health services employing over 4000 people across a range of primary, community and specialist services. CPFT provides over 60 inpatient and community services to a population of around 500,00 people.

In the wider Cumbrian context, there is strategic commitment across primary and secondary care, commissioners, the local authority and the third sector to work creatively and collaboratively across the whole health and social care economy. The development of this is supported by the Cumbrian Learning and Innovation Collaborative (CLIC) and the Cumbrian Alliance.

This is an exciting time for the Trust with a relatively new CEO and recently appointed Medical Director. The Trust has recently restructured to support and enable our journey of improving quality and patient safety. The clinical services are structured in 4 Care Groups: Children’s Services, Community Services, Specialist Services and Mental Health. Although separately managed, there is an emerging culture of synergistic, cross boundary working between the Care Groups.
