Senior Development Scientist - PDPU

This post is for a fixed term/secondment 13-month maternity cover. Secondments will be considered for NHSBT staff wishing to apply for this role.

The Protein Development and Production Unit (PDPU) is part of the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL) which performs a vital role within NHS Blood and Transport (NHSBT). The PDPU is involved in a range of projects to develop and produce recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. These reagents, some of which are CE marked, are used in diagnostic tests and for research. These reagents are supplied internally for use within NHSBT e.g. the Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) department which provides a role in solving complex serological cross matching cases, but also, they are supplied to hospitals, academic institutions and commercial customers worldwide.

We are looking to recruit a senior development scientist to join the PDPU. The post holder will have a degree and MSc in a relevant subject and will be involved in the development and production of novel recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. The post-holder should have a wide range of experience in molecular biology, cell culture, immunoassay and protein purification techniques. Other laboratory experience such as flow cytometry and serologial testing would also be desirable. The post-holder must have proven ability to prioritise workload against conflicting demands and be able to resolve a range of complex scientific/technical problems. The post-holder must be able to work independently, and with staff across departments as well as external customers/collaborators. The post holder must have the ability to communicate complex specialist information, both orally and in writing, to scientific staff and customers/collaborators. It is essential to have good record-keeping skills and experience of working to GMP or equivalent would be advantageous.
