Following an NHSI initiative to establish 29 Pathology networks across England the University Hospital of North Midlands is currently working closely with Mid and East Cheshire NHS Trusts to establish a Pathology network across Staffordshire and Cheshire.

We have vacancies for two experienced Histology Specialist Biomedical Scientists (BMS1 – Band 6) in our Cellular Pathology department. One post is full time and the other is part time (24.35 hours per week).

The role is interesting and varied, involving rotation around the different sections of the department, including:

  • Cut Up / Specimen dissection where you will perform specimen dissection of Category A and B specimens and slicing of large specimens for fixation
  • Embedding
  • Microtomy and cryotomy
  • Staining (including routine, special stains and immunohistochemistry)
  • Post vasectomy semen analysis
  • Quality control

There is also involvement in supervision, training and appraisal of Medical Laboratory Assistants and Trainee Biomedical Scientists and in other duties including audit and writing and review of Standard Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments.

We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with BSc. However, consideration will be given to Band 5 HCPC Registered BMSs, who would be expected to complete the Specialist Diploma before progressing to Band 6.

Candidates will require experience in training and supervision of staff and evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). You will also require information technology skills and must be conversant with laboratory data management systems.

You will be required to work to a high standard and organise your own workload. You should have good organisational and communication skills and be able to work individually and as part of a team. You must also have the ability to work under pressure.

The Cellular Pathology department is based at Leighton Hospital and is part of Cheshire Pathology Services. The laboratory is UKAS accredited and has a well-established quality management system.

As part of the NHSI initiative, Cheshire Pathology Services are looking at a proposed network with University Hospital North Midlands.
