The National Infections Services (NIS) plays an important role in preparing for and coordinating responses to potential healthcare emergencies, including possible acts of deliberate release. In addition, the Centre undertakes both basic and applied research into understanding infectious diseases and manufactures a number of healthcare products, including vaccines and therapeutics.

The PHE Culture Collections is a Biological Resource Centre that provides a service maintaining and supplying strains of cultured cells and microorganisms for public health research. It is structured as a fully integrated service, underpinning science with significant scientific, manufacturing and business activities and operates from laboratories across the PHE.

The successful post holder will provide support for the laboratory operations including: the cultivation, freeze drying and banking of all strains within the National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC); replenishment and upkeep of inventory and test records; and also maintaining the electronic database.

The successful candidate should hold a Biomedical Science/Microbiology degree or equivalent biological science qualification and experience in working in a microbiology laboratory is essential.
