Derriford Hospital

Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

Applications are invited for the appointment of a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with an interest in Integrated Respiratory care. This is an exciting new post developed in partnership with NEW Devon CCG and LiveWell SW. The successful candidate will have significant influence in leading and shaping both the role itself and the innovative new service it delivers.

Derriford Hospital is a large teaching hospital with approximately 1000 beds and provides comprehensive acute services for a population of 435,000 and tertiary services for 1.5 million in the South West Peninsula. The department of Respiratory Medicine is based in a dedicated Chest Clinic and is supported by a team of respiratory nurse specialists. Outpatient facilities are situated within the chest clinic where a fully equipped lung function laboratory is also sited. Inpatient care is provided on 2 wards both of which include a dedicated high care area for patients requiring non-invasive ventilation, intensive medical care, and step down care post ICU admission. Bronchoscopies are performed in a planned investigation unit. The department has strong links with the departments of radiology, thoracic surgery and oncology which are all based on the Derriford site. LiveWell SW employs an established team of community based specialist respiratory nurses and physiotherapists based at the Cumberland Centre in Plymouth. Their current role is to deliver pulmonary rehabilitation, prevent admissions and support patients following admission.

Significant change has occurred in the respiratory department over the last few years and we are looking for a motivated individual to help develop the department further. The aims of this particular post are to help prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, support the community specialist respiratory team as they expand their role and to develop closer working with primary care with for example virtual clinics and community based outpatient activity. The timetable for the job will have some flexibility, but the successful candidate will not be expected to take part in the General Medical on-call rota but should be on the Specialist Register for Respiratory and General Internal Medicine or be within 6 months of gaining their CCT at the time of interview.
