Brief Description of the Role:


Born in Bradford have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Fellow to come and work with us in our ground breaking interventional research centre - the Better Start Bradford Innovation Hub.


The post holder will be a key member of the BSBIH, hosted by Born in Bradford. Born in Bradford is an internationally acclaimed applied research programme that aims to achieve a healthier, fairer future for children living in the vibrant, ethnically diverse but deprived city of Bradford. It hosts three birth cohort studies including the world’s first interventional birth cohort – Born in Bradford’s Better Start (BiBBS).


This is a unique opportunity to be part of an initiative which aims to improve the life chances of children living in deprived and ethnically diverse areas of Bradford city. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, Better Start Bradford aims to help children in three wards of the city, Little Horton, Bowling and Barkerend, and Bradford Moor, to get the best start in life. They provide multiple projects for pregnant women and families with children aged 0-3 years.


The Better Start Bradford Innovation Hubleads on the evaluations of these projects to find out how best to improve the social and emotional development, communication and language development, and health and nutrition of young children. A key element of this work is the BiBBS cohort which links research, routine health and education data, and intervention participation to evaluate the impact of these interventions.


The post holder will work under the supervision and mentorship of Dr Josie Dickerson, Research Director, and will have support from the data analytics, epi-stats and quasi-experimental methods groups within Born in Bradford, as well as academics based at the Universities of York, Leeds and Sheffield. They will have expertise in dealing with big data (including cleaning and linkage using programming tools), and a track record of conducting advanced quantitative statistical methods to answer applied health research questions. They will also have an approachable manner, and experience of working with NHS, local authority or community services is desirable.
