In addition to transplantation, Royal Papworth Hospital has the UK’s largest Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) and is one of five UK centres providing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to patients experiencing severe respiratory failure. It is also the only centre in the UK for a number of specialist services including Pulmonary Endarterectomy and Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA).

Role Title: Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse

Band 6 Post: Cardiothoracic and Transplant Surgery,

Hours per week: 37.5 (Full time)

5North welcomes you to apply for cardiothoracic band 6, deputy sister/charge nurse post.

5 North is a 40-bedded ward, which is on the cutting edge of technology, providing care for patients undergoing pioneering cardiac surgery as well as heart and lung transplantation. 5 North is in the process of developing a 4-bedded PCU area set within the existing ward for patients requiring a higher level of nursing intervention.

We require an individual with outstanding communication skills who is confident in their decision making, and is committed to providing managerial support to the ward managers and clinical leadership to the ward team. You will be expected to, deputise in the absence of the ward manager and will oversee the day to day clinical operations of the department providing clear leadership to the nursing team by acting as an expert practitioner and role model assisting junior colleagues to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to benefit the treatment and care of critically ill patients in our hospital. The role includes responsibility for systems which ensure the implementation, maintenance and monitoring of quality standards, the delivery of supervision and appraisal and the management of clinical rosters in line with our performance goals.

It is an essential criteria that candidates who apply for this role hold a nursing degree or equivalent qualification and are actively registered with the Royal College of Nursing. We ask that you have previous experience of working in a cardiothoracic or thoracic setting. This should be set out clearly in your application.
