Consultant in Acute Medicine (with/without Sub Specialty Interest)


Are you looking for the next step on your career ladder or looking to gain more experience as a Consultant?If you are interested in a position of whole time or maximum part-time as a Consultant in Acute Medicine this may be the perfect opportunity.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join and expand further our dynamic and well-respected Acute Medicine team here at Barnsley Hospital.

The successful applicant will join a team of eleven consultants. Each member of the consultant team demonstrates clinical excellence, and each brings additional skills to the team, including research, teaching, education and management. Most importantly, the team work collaboratively together.

This is a substantive post to support the management of patients within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) footprint, including our Short Stay Unit (SSU) and our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit, co-located close to the Emergency Department.


This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading AMU’s in the region offering exceptional support to pursue professional activities and / or sub-specialty interests and / or leadership roles.


The post-holder will have responsibility for Acute Medical patients inclusive of a commitment to the physician on call General Internal Medicine (GIM) rota. This is a 1:4 weeks mid-week day and 1:16 full weekends.


Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be considered for the post(s); if such a person is appointed modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a ‘Good’ CQC-rated Hospital with a vision to moving to “Outstanding” and joining only a small number of other hospitals in the country with this rating.

The current staffing is 10 Consultants 2 SAS doctors, 1 ST4-7, and a mixture of CT3-6, CT1/GP VTS/F2 or FY1 doctors. We are also currently established for 6 full-time Physician Associates.

The hospital is an associate teaching hospital of the University of Sheffield and the Emergency Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical education. Candidates must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of eligibility for entry.

Standard Check: £18.00 + Administration cost of £3.69 = deduction from salary as a one-off payment


Enhanced Check: £38.00 + administration cost of £3.69 = £13.69 deduction from 1st months’ salary, then deduction from salary over following 3 months.
