An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and forward-thinking Senior Special School Nurse to join our Special School Nursing team. As part of Solent NHS Trust’s Community Children’s Nursing Service within the West locality, we provide Specialist School Nursing to eight Special Schools across the Southampton, Hampshire and Isle of Wight area and we are looking to recruit to a vacancy based at Cedar school in Southampton.

Cedar School caters for approximately 95 children and young people who have complex health needs and learning difficulties aged four to sixteen. The school caters for a range of Special Educational Needs as well as CYP with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders.

The Special School Nursing team works collaboratively with children, families, carers, school staff and the wider multi-disciplinary team within the education setting to ensure a supportive and caring learning environment. The nurse will be responsible for providing clinical skills and ensuring a holistic, family centered approach to assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the health needs of the children within specialist education. This opportunity will provide excellent experience of working with children within the special school setting. The role will include teaching/training, representing at meetings and maintaining the health needs of the children, this will involve a range of complex care, such as epilepsy management, enteral feeding, and tracheostomy care.

The Schools caters for children and young people who have complex learning difficulties. It provides outstanding quality education and care of its pupils and caters for a range of Special Educational Needs as well as CYP with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders.

The candidate must either be an experienced Children’s Nurse or experienced Learning Disability Nurse with recent experience of working with children. Previous experience of special school nursing would be desirable and the ability to lead a small team of nurses.

As a Senior SSN you will have the opportunity to shape and lead our responsive service as it continually adapts to the ever-changing needs of the families we care for. You will have a key role in leading care planning, training, and multi-disciplinary liaison for CYP with a range of needs within their school and wider community settings.

This opportunity will provide experience of working with CYP and families and schools in the community setting as well as the chance to transfer a wide range of clinical skills. This role will also enable you to further develop your leadership and management skills within a supportive and experienced team. If you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to lead as a team player, as well as the initiative to work autonomously and effectively this could be the challenge for you. You should have good organisational skills and evidence of continued professional development.
