Midwifery Workforce development, Recruitment and Retention Lead - Band 8a - FTC 12 months

Ashford & St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a passionate and forward-thinking midwife for this leadership role. You will be responsible for the development and implementation of a Recruitment and Retention strategy specifically for midwives and midwifery support staff, linking between the Trust and Higher Education providers to Surrey, Kingston and West London Universities.

You will be responsible for the leadership of the Clinical Practice Education Team and the development of the education and development strategy for the midwifery team.

You will receive valuable insight into the strategic aspects of the maternity service and gain experience working with quality and improvement teams.

Within ASPH we have a range of services. We provide a homebirth service, an alongside birthing centre, a level 3 Neonatal Unit and high risk maternal and fetal medicine service. This will give you the opportunity to become skilled in all areas of midwifery. We pride ourselves on our MDT approach to continuously improve the perinatal service.

  • Reporting and Workforce Planning – work with the Head of Midwifery/Deputy Head of Midwifery/ Transformation Lead to develop a workforce plan for both registered and support staff.
  • Provide the organisation with high quality reporting in respect of the recruitment effort now and in the future.
  • The postholder will be responsible for motivating and engaging the maternity staff workforce. Aiming to support the workforce in a holistic fashion targeting wellbeing, skills and career development and organisational loyalty.
  • Lead on recruitment plan/pipeline/data on current status/ and ensuring the recruitment of staff and actions necessary are taken.
  • Ensure full Induction and support for staff in their first year is fully planned, supported and monitored.
  • Analyse and report on national, regional and local data to develop targeted interventions related to staff experience and report on the success of interventions.
  • Support recruitment efforts to the Trust’s Staff Bank with the aim of reducing reliance on agency workers and assuring quality of Bank Workers
  • Optimise wellbeing for new starters during induction period to support and enhance resilience.
  • Retention – work with midwifery colleagues to ensure that nursing and midwifery turnover is addressed and key staff are retained.
  • Work closely with the senior midwifery team to reduce vacancy rates via recruitment and retention.
  • Support the PMA team to provide psychological support sessions for staff.
  • Participate in development and promotion of a culture which is supportive and works within the A-EQUIP model parameters.
  • An integral part of the role will be the provision of clinical and professional advice ensuring optimal use of midwives’ skills.
  • He/she will liaise closely with the Head of Midwifery, Deputy Head of MidwiferyMidwifery Matrons, Consultant Midwife, Clinical education team and Specialist Midwives regarding training needs for staff
  • There will be a strong focus on supporting midwives in clinical practice and ensuring all induction mentoring and mandatory training of new staff is robustly in place and completed.This role requires a midwife who is highly clinically skilled and experienced.
