An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and forward-thinking nurse to join our Special School Nursing team. As part of Solent NHS Trust’s Community Children’s Nursing Service within the West locality, we provide Specialist School Nursing to eight Special Schools across the Southampton,  Hampshire and the IOW and we are looking to recruit a Special School Nurse to work across Medina School and St Georges IOW.

Medina School provides for approximately 100 children and young people (CYP) aged 2-11 years and St Georges School provides for approximately 185 CYP aged 11-19 years. The Schools caters for children and young people who have complex learning difficulties. It provides outstanding quality education and care of its pupils and caters for a range of Special Educational Needs as well as CYP with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders.

The Special School Nursing team works collaboratively with children, families, carers, school staff and the wider multi-disciplinary team within the education setting to ensure a supportive and caring learning environment. The nurse will be responsible for providing clinical skills and ensuring a holistic, family centered approach to assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the health needs of the children within specialist education. This opportunity will provide excellent experience of working with children within the special school setting. The role will include teaching/training, representing at meetings and maintaining the health needs of the children, this will involve a range of complex care, such as epilepsy management, enteral feeding, and tracheostomy care.

If you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work as a team player, as well as the initiative to work autonomously, we would like to hear from you. You should have good organisational skills and evidence of continued professional development.

The candidate must either be a Children’s Nurse or Learning Disability Nurse with recent experience of working with children. Previous experience of special school nursing would be desirable.
