We provide acute and planned inpatient and outpatient care for our local community with a strong commitment to staff health and wellbeing. We are committed to providing continuous professional development, staff benefits and flexibility to shape our workforce around our patient care.

The Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services Histopathology department is seeking an enthusiastic Consultant Histopathologist to join our busy Histology reporting team.

Candidates should be medically qualified and must hold CCT accreditation (or be within 6 months of the award of CCT) and Fellowship of RCPath or equivalent. A high level of competence and full participation in diagnostic histopathology will be essential and involvement in departmental audit is required. Applicants both with and without well-developed subspecialty interests are encouraged to apply. Practitioners unable for personal reasons to work full time are welcome to apply for this post.

    • This is a replacement post. The successful applicant will join the current team of four consultant cellular pathologists, an associate specialist and a Specialty Doctor and will share equally in the workload. The current Consultants cover all major specialties, the department is planning to move towards sub-speciality reporting for many specimen types and there will be an opportunity to develop any sub-speciality interests in line with overall service delivery/development. An interest in Lung pathology would be desirable.
    • There will be the opportunity to develop an interest in molecular. Digital pathology is currently being implemented in the department.
    • At present, most specimen cut-up is done by the consultants, though there is BMS small specimen transfer and some BMS Advanced Practitioner small specimen dissection. The new appointee will be able to contribute to the development of the BMS cut up service.
    • A high priority is placed on clinico-pathological communication; full participation in MDT meetings and other meetings to discuss development of the service is considered essential. The post would involve preparing and attending one of the cancer MDTs and covering other MDTs as per the departmental requirements.
    • There are opportunities for the new appointee to participate in the Coroners’ Autopsy rota, though this is work outside the Consultant Contract with the Trust and is at the discretion of the local Coroners. The department performs a very small number of hospital post-mortem examinations per year.
    • An individual office with microscope and PC with full internet access will be provided. There is existing secretarial support for this post and the department is currently introducing voice recognition software for routine reporting for those consultants who wish to use it.
    • The new appointee will be expected to participate in the departmental audit activities
    • Deliver Clinical, Educational, Managerial Services of the highest professional standard at Consultant Level to the Department
    • Work with existing consultants and the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high quality well-led service for patients of Ashford & St Peter’s, including the diagnosis, investigations, treatment and management of patients, in accordance with Trust policies and practices.
    • Deliver Direct Clinical Care to patients, through all parts of the Department assisting clinical decision-making and sharing equally in the workload.
    • The Consultant team will provide comprehensive senior clinical cover to the Department.
