Would you like to work in Cornwall?

Cornwall Health for Homeless is pleased to be able to offer a rare and unique opportunity to work flexibly, creatively and rewardingly with some of the most disadvantaged individuals in our county.

At present we are looking for either a GP or Advanced Clinical Practitioner to fill a vacancy in our small team of 1.5 wte GPs and a full-time specialist nurse.

This is a substantive, salaried position with the potential to adapt regular hours to suit the individual applicant – varying from one to four days a week. There is no requirement to work in the evenings, at weekends or on Bank Holidays. Pay is in the range from X to X with extra income available to those willing to take on additional responsibilities within the team, such as service development.

We are an Emis based practic1.5e, with approximately 250 registered patients distributed across Cornwall. All our patients are either street homeless or unstably housed. We currently offer both drop-in and booked appointments at each of our three clinic sites in Truro, Pool and Penzance. As might be expected, home visits are rarely needed.

The complexity of patient need is high, both in terms of physical and psychological morbidity. Skill is also necessary in the management of long-term addictions (for which training is available if required). Successful practitioners require excellent interpersonal skills to establish good patient rapport, as well as a keen interest in pursuing a tolerant, empathic and holistic approach. Multidisciplinary working with a broad range of other organisations is essential.

Health for Homeless is very unusual in being block-funded and therefore not required to claim for capitation, QOF or other payments. We have our own small, admin team supported by a part-time office manager. In addition, we have more extensive backing from Cornwall Partnership Foundation Trust, which includes the assistance of a specific mental health team dedicated to the needs of the homeless population.

For those who may be thinking of applying from outside the county, it goes without saying that Cornwall is in an extremely privileged position to offer a superb range of recreational activities to support a healthy work-life balance - from sailing and surfing to rugged coastal walks and a thriving theatre and arts scene.

If you are thinking of applying, or want to discuss the role in more detail, please feel free to contact the current team lead Dr Kerry Bailey at, or via our office on 01872 273617.

Observational sessions sitting in with one of the members of the team can be arranged by contacting
