What does a Technical and Clinical Director do at NHS Supply Chain?

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Technical & Clinical Director (T&CD) will be responsible for leading and providing executive representation for the Technical and Clinical function, including owning the Clinical engagement model for the NHS Supply Chain. Specifying products and assuring both products and suppliers and owning the relationships with business-critical regulators including, but not limited to, the MHRA and HSE.

You will have accountability to assure that Category Management, however delivered, includes appropriate processes to supply to the healthcare providers, products which are of the target quality, deliver value and are appropriate to meet the needs of patient care. The Technical and Commercial Director will engage with a range of clinicians (nationally, regionally, and locally), patients, professional bodies, and other key national stakeholders to understand product range and work with colleagues across the NHS Supply Chain to ensure solutions achieve the needs of the healthcare family. 

You will collaborate, participate and be responsive to the transformation and innovation of clinical pathways and relationships with the wider healthcare family including, but not limited to GIRFT and National Clinical Directors.  In addition, you will ensure that a consistent and effective specification and assurance processes are consistently delivered, leading and setting national standards for clinical evaluation as part of Category Management activity.

  • Develop, evolve and execute the functional strategy to achieve the vision and through appropriate insight ensure that the future Technical and Clinical capability is focussed on the NHS Supply Chain strategic priorities
  • Drive and champion patient safety and patient centred programmes aligned to the strategic objectives of the NHS Supply Chain through leading and developing a culture where outstanding product selection is recognised as key to delivering value and improving patient care
  • Promote a whole systems approach to range management ensuring that the needs of the patient are represented and influence range management decisions and strategies

What skills, qualifications and qualities do I need to be successful?

  • An extensive level of clinical experience within the care delivery landscape, with a significant amount of experience at national level and is a registered healthcare professional (e.g. NMC, HCPC or GMC).
  • Evidence of thought leadership / influence at a national level.
  • Recognised as an expert in the field of developing clinical product evaluation and in clinical leadership.
  • Demonstrable track record of managing contracting arrangements with the public and/or private sector patient care with knowledge of clinical procurement and national procurement initiatives.
  • Experience of working at or near Board level in the relevant field, and with a national professional profile with professional bodies such as Royal Colleges.
  • Experience of developing systems and processes at a national level to provide consistency across a variety of settings.
  • Demonstrable experience and a track record of building, developing, and leading an organisation through a period of significant transformation.
  • Demonstrable track record of high performance and delivery, including the delivery of proven operational and financial strategies that impact on business and operational performance.
  • An extensive level of clinical experience within the care delivery landscape, with a significant amount of experience at national level and is a Registered healthcare professional (eg NMC, HCPC or GMC).

How you’ll work:

From Spring 2022 we will move to hybrid working; a blend of home and office working 2/3 days in the office and 2/3 days at home.
