We have an interesting opportunity for a Band 5 Civilian Dental Hygienist to join the team within Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) at RNAS Culdrose.

We at DPHC work to contribute to a safe and effective healthcare service. This is achieved through the delivery of an occupationally-aware primary healthcare service which includes dental and rehabilitation services.

The main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring surgeries are prepared appropriately for the day’s patients following current regulations.
  • Carrying out and recording daily maintenance, servicing and pre-use checks of dental equipment reporting defects following equipment care policies.
  • Ensuring a daily test radiograph is taken and processed with all findings reported in accordance with extant policies and signed off by a clinician or trained individual.
  • Meeting the needs of the patients by monitoring, supporting and reassuring each individual according to their specific needs, providing appropriate advice when required. This may include recognising and interpreting behaviours, especially those associated with anxious patients and dealing with them accordingly.
  • Ensuring that all periodontal patients and patients in other risk categories e.g., caries are recalled appropriately for review or at the next Periodic Dental Inspection appointments.
  • Carry out dental work under the direction of a registered dentist who has examined the patient and indicated in writing the course of treatment to be provided.

Qualifications and Memberships

Candidates will be required to show evidence of the following:

  • Knowledge of range of oral health procedures; acquired through training to degree level or to diploma level plus experience to degree equivalent level.
  • Must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
  • Due to COVID 19, there is now a requirement for dental clinical staff to be fit tested for a FFP3 mask, which has to be worn when managing a patient who is undergoing an aerosol generating procedure (AGP). The successful candidate will be fit tested prior to commencing employment.

A full United Kingdom driving licence is required in order to drive to other dental centres to provide assistance as required.

Further Information

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is security check.

There is no requirement to deploy as this is met by our uniformed personnel, but you will form the continuity of care required by our patients when based at home.
