Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust was rated good by the Care Quality Commission in its recent inspection report published in January 2020.

The Trust is committed to driving excellence in care for patients and communities, through its five-year strategy ‘Working Together’. In support of its strategy, in July 2020, the Trust became a university hospital, and will work to drive benefits for patients, colleagues and the local community by embedding research, education and training across the organisation.

The Trust’s main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which started life more than a century ago as a military hospital. Today it is one of the largest, modern hospitals on the south coast, with 1,200 beds housed in light, bright, infection resistant, en-suite wards. With a turnover of close to £600m, the Trust provides comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. Some tertiary services are provided to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7,300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

Being You @ PHU

Our patients come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our hospital stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for getting it right for patients, colleagues and our community you will find a home at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU).

In recruiting for our team, we welcome the unique contributions that you can bring in terms of your education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, nation of origin, age, languages spoken, veteran’s status, colour, religion, disability, sexual orientation and beliefs.

Medical Examiner

We are expanding our team of Medical Examiners (MEs) to scrutinise all deaths within the area in and surrounding Portsmouth. We are looking for approximately 8 GMC registered Doctors with a minimum of 5 years post registration experience, to join our team here at QAH. Our current MEs find the job challenging but rewarding: providing support and explanation for bereaved relatives, support for colleagues throughout the medical sphere, improving clinical care by integrating with Governance systems, and improving death certification and referrals to the Coronial system.

We would be looking for each Doctor to provide about 1 session of approximately 4 hours each week based on a 42 week year. You would be expected to offer sessions flexibly (within reason) to fulfil a rota. There is currently no commitment beyond office hours. The job is based at QAH, and regular attendance will be required, but elements of the work will be possible remotely using electronic systems to scrutinise patient records and telephone calls to bereaved relatives and attending medical colleagues. Competence with multiple electronic systems is necessary to review records and complete notes. Team working is important, particularly with our team of Medical Examiner Officers, and also with Coroners, General Registrars and Legal Services. You should have up to date knowledge of medical practice. You should have completed the mandatory online learning by the time of interview and be in the process of completing the Face to face training with the College of Pathologists.

The service will be hosted by Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust, who will be your employer. There is not a national ME contract and so the salary will be calculated according to your previous experience, usually on the Consultant pay scale.

Are you someone looking for a new challenge in the newest Medical Specialty, working with a diverse team of colleagues in primary and Secondary Care, and with a drive to improve clinical care? Then please contact Dr Sean Elliott (Lead ME) for further detail on 02392 286000 ext 6298

Closing date: 18th March 2022

Interview date: 22nd April 2022
