Since carrying out the UK’s first successful heart transplant in 1979, the hospital now performs more heart, heart-lung and lung transplants each year than any other UK centre.

In addition to transplantation, Royal Papworth Hospital has the UK’s largest Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) and is one of five UK centres providing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to patients experiencing severe respiratory failure. It is also the only centre in the UK for a number of specialist services including Pulmonary Endarterectomy and Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA).

Full Time - 37.5 Hours
£32,306-£39,027 - Per Annum -Pro Rata

Applications are invited for the post of Statistician to be based in the Research and Development Unit at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. Royal Papworth Hospital has a long-standing collaboration with the University of Cambridge, MRC Biostatistics Unit where the successful applicant will enjoy visiting worker rights and benefit from the day-to-day support (onsite and offsite) from a designated Senior Statistician. The post represents an excellent development opportunity as the successful applicant will work closely with both trial methodologists at the Biostatistics Unit and research practitioners at Papworth Hospital in advancing health research.

The successful applicant will contribute to on-going clinical studies at Papworth and play a key role in the design of new studies, protocol writing, statistical analysis plan development and the analysis and reporting of studies leading to publications.

Applicants should have a postgraduate degree in statistics or a related subject and statistical computing experience, e.g. programming in R, Stata or SPSS. Some knowledge / experience of clinical trials would be advantageous, however training can be provided. Applicants should possess excellent communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to writing scientific papers.

Royal Papworth Hospital is the largest specialist cardiothoracic (heart and lung) hospital in the UK and includes the country's main heart and lung transplant centre. We have a long and established reputation for innovation and leading-edge research. Royal Papworth Hospitals hosts Papworth Trials Unit Collaboration, which is a UKCRC registered Trials Unit and the successful applicant will work within the Trials Unit. The Trials Unit currently manages several multi-centred surgical trials.

The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the development, application and dissemination of statistical methods. It is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions and includes many internationally renowned statisticians.

The position will be based in the brand new HLRI, situated next to the hospital, opening Spring 2022.
