Band 5 £25,655 to £31,534 per annum

Band 6 £32,306 to £39,027 per annum

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Orthoptist to join our friendly and progressive team of 15 Orthoptists and 23 Consultant Ophthalmologists and work in an exciting and challenging setting.

The Newcastle Eye Centre is a large tertiary referral centre and this post provides opportunities for development of clinical skills. The successful candidate will experience an excellent case mix of paediatric, adult motility, neuro-ophthalmology, thyroid and oculo-plastics in both community and hospital settings. There will also be opportunity to be involved in the delivery of community pre-school Orthoptic assessment clinics.

CPD is actively promoted within the department. In addition, the department is committed to audit and research (both local and multi-centre) and there are opportunities for involvement in these areas.

Clinical teaching of Orthoptic under graduates, junior doctors and other health professionals is regularly undertaken within the Orthoptic department. A recognised teaching qualification, or interest in working towards such, is desirable.

Applications are welcomed from newly and recently qualified Orthoptists. Consideration will be given to applicants who do not meet the criteria for Band 6 who meet the criteria for appointment at Band 5. Appointment in these circumstances will be subject to satisfactory completion of a specified period of supervision and training before moving to Band 6. If appointed at Band 5, to attain Band 6 you will be required to have significant post-graduate experience and achieve a portfolio of evidence demonstrating specialist skills and experience necessary for clinical assessment within orthoptic subspecialties (e.g. neuro-ophthalmology, thyroid, neonatal, genetics). Failure to attain the significant post-graduate experience and portfolio of evidence within 18 months of date of appointment may result in a review of your employment. A Degree or Diploma in Orthoptics and State Registration with the HCPC is essential. A car driver/owner is desirable.
