Senior Therapy Radiographer

Here at Plymouth Oncology Centre we value our staff group and appreciate that valued staff work better as a team and are intrinsically motivated to deliver the best quality care and treatment for our patients.

We are therefore seeking applications from enthusiastic and highly dedicated therapy radiographers who would like to develop their knowledge, care and skills in a forward thinking and technically advancing department. Due to staff relocation and a restructuring program we are currently seeking a mix of motivated professional Radiographers to join our expanding Oncology team.

We focus on giving our patients the best outcomes of care and an excellent experience whilst in our hospital which is supported by our high patient satisfaction feedback. By ensuring a skilled and driven staff group, we aim to best meet patients’ needs and ensure excellent productivity.

The Plymouth Oncology Centre is a purpose built unit combining a busy radiotherapy and outpatients department. The department is equipped with Varian Medical Systems Linear Accelerators and has a fully integrated ARIA network. Joining our Radiotherapy team, you will benefit from working as part of a friendly, well organised and social group.

We offer a diverse patient workload including Total Body Irradiation, DIBH, Gynaecological Brachytherapy, Cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy and lung SABR. This does offer plenty of learning and development opportunities for all staff members. We are also looking to develop our SABR services to include Oligomets and HCC.

The department has a dedicated pre-treatment equipped with a state of the art new GE Discovery Wide-bore model. We also are equipped with a mould room providing full mould room services from trained technicians. Our 3-D treatment planning uses the Varian Eclipse system and Prosoma for our extensive Virtual Simulation service. We perform 4D-CT scans and can see this area expanding further in the near future.

We have a dedicated team to head up our busy Radiotherapy Support Services area. Staff in this area facilitate Oncologist and Radiographer led on treatment reviews, as well as all other patient reviews and interact with a wide ranging multidisciplinary team. We also have Radiographers who are trained in consent and are looking to start an Independent Prescribing course.

We have undergone an ARIA and ECLIPSE upgrade to version 15 and this year we will be embarking on an ambitious project to develop the department into a paperlight facility to streamline our processes.

We are also finalising a new project to relocate our brachytherapy services to a new fully functional suite to allow development of this service. The department currently delivers High Dose Rate gynaecological brachytherapy using a Varian HDR Gamma-Med PLUS Ix unit. We are looking to commence HDR prostate brachytherapy soon.

The treatment floor houses 3 Varian Linacs all with rotational IMRT and IGRT capabilities. We have a mixture of Trubeam, IX and Novalis units which are all beam matched. We regularly deliver over 55% of our treatments using IMRT, well exceeding the National targets, and in the last year moved to routinely offering DIBH. Radiographers receive additional training to extend their scope of practice in these areas. We will shortly be entering a new phase of Linac replacement where we will be looking to acquire the latest technology to ensure we can continue to move forward and continue to deliver world class Radiotherapy

Later in 2020 we are looking to start our Linear Accelerator machine replacement program and will update all Linear Accelerators to Varian Truebeam technology.

We routinely support post graduate training for Radiographers, training and skills development, both in-house and through external courses. We currently facilitate regular scheduled group and individual CPD activities allowing staff time to build a strong portfolio.

Plymouth Oncology Centre also has a busy Research Department and is actively involved in Radiotherapy trials.

You will participate in the training of Student Radiographers and in the On-call Rota.

The Government has formally announced that it intends to introduce regulations that will require most healthcare workers to be fully vaccinated (first and second dose) against COVID-19 by a UK approved vaccine by the1st April 2022. To achieve this the successful applicant must have had their first COVID-19 vaccination by the3rd February2022.Therefore, full COVID-19 vaccination will be a condition of employment unless an individual is medically exempt. We will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process.

The Government had passed legislation requiring vaccination as a condition of deployment which was due to come into place from 1st April 2022. However, on 31st January 2022, the Secretary of State announced that this is being revoked. The government has since announced that it will bring forward the regulations to revoke vaccination as a condition of deployment. The revocation of the regulations will come into force on 15th March 2022 and this means that there will now be no legal requirement for staff to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 from 1st April 2022.

Whilst this is no longer a condition of employment, UHP NHS Trust strongly recommend that you are vaccinated against Covid-19 and full vaccination remains the best line of defence in order to protect yourself, your colleagues and your family.
