An exciting opportunity has arisen within Community Respiratory with Solent East NHS Trust Specialist Services for a Band 6 Respiratory Physiotherapist or Nurse to work with our Respiratory Services. The primary focus of the role will be the assessment and review of home oxygen therapy. This position also provides an opportunity to work across our Home Oxygen service and developing Breathlessness diagnostic service, linking with our Heart Failure Specialist Nurses and Pulmonary Rehab Team as we integrate cardio-respiratory services.

You will be required to drive for this role so a car owner is essential with a full licence.

The service forms part of our Community Respiratory Service, with flexible working across breathlessness diagnosis, Home Oxygen and Pulmonary Rehabilitation pathways.

  • Home Oxygen is a community assessment service for predominantly cardiorespiratory adult patients with complex needs living in Portsmouth City area. These patients require assessment and ongoing management of either Long Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOT), Ambulatory Oxygen Therapy (AOT), Short-Burst Oxygen Therapy (SBOT) or Palliative Oxygen Therapy (POT) in line with BTS guidelines and key standards of practice.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation assesses and provides treatment to patient’s in Portsmouth and parts of Hampshire. It is is a prescribed and progressive exercise and education programme designed for people with COPD, Bronchiectasis and Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILDs) who experience symptoms of breathlessness, to better understand and their condition/s and symptoms to support effective self-management.

Job Responsibilities

  • To meet the needs of patients and their families to achieve improved health outcomes and promote health and wellbeing while demonstrating care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. Care is based on comprehensive assessment, ensures continuity and is patient/client centred, culturally sensitive and evidence-based and which promotes independence.
  • May be responsible for co-ordinating the day to day work of the breathlessness team and Home Oxygen team, influencing clinical decisions and monitoring the quality of patient care provided through utilising and maintaining expert clinical knowledge relevant to own field of practice, underpinned by theory and expertise.
  • Supervise junior members of staff, students on placements
  • Critical analysis of complex clinical data, such as spirometry and arterial/capillary blood sampling to inform diagnosis and decision making

To succeed in this post you will need to have an interest in managing patients with chronic respiratory disease and ideally have some understanding of pulmonary rehabilitation, home oxygen therapy and chronic respiratory disease management of patients with Bronchiectasis, COPD, Interstitial Lung Diseases. You will have experience in working autonomously or conducting clinics, whether that be via an outpatient department or in a community setting.
