The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance and advice on promoting high quality health, public health and social care.

Our role is to improve outcomes for people using the NHS and other public health and social care services. We do this by:

  • Producing evidence-based guidance and advice for health, public health and social care practitioners.
  • Developing quality standards and performance metrics for those providing and commissioning health, public health and social care services;
  • Providing a range of information services for commissioners, practitioners and managers across the spectrum of health and social care.

Role title: Technical Analyst (Economics)

The Roles:

1 x 12 months fixed term, secondment cover until April 2023

1 x permanent contract

The Roles:

Reporting to the Technical Adviser, the Technical Analyst will be responsible for providing advice and technical support to committees on economic issues during development and updating of guidelines. This includes systematically identifying and appraising economic evidence to address key health and social care questions and preparing structured summaries of the evidence. The post holder will also undertake the development of original, applied decision models and analyses that will be used to inform the deliberations of the guideline committee (comprising decision-makers who are predominantly clinical, public health, social care and patient experts with limited formal expertise in economics).

What you will bring to NICE:

The primary requirement for the position is demonstrable ability in the practical application of mathematical modelling to inform real-world decision problems.

The post holder should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Skills and experience in economics, mathematical modelling, statistics, operations research and/or data science.
  • Expert ability in the analysis and synthesis of quantitative data.
  • Ability to communicate the methods and results of complex analyses to a range of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • At present, the team has a preference for models developed in MS Excel, R, TreeAge and/or WinBUGS; however, applications from candidates with experience in other platforms are welcome.

You will have the opportunity to extend your own skills in modelling and economics and contribute to methodological developments in the field.

The post holder should be able to demonstrate the following on their application:

  • Masters degree or Doctorate in a numerate subject or subjects with relevance to evidence-based decision-making (e.g. economics, public health, mathematics, operations research, data science) or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience and further training/development
  • Substantial experience of at least 1 software package for the implementation of decision models (e.g. Excel [including Visual Basic for Applications], TreeAge, R, WinBUGS, Simul8, Arena).
  • Experience using at least 1 software package for the analysis of statistics (e.g. R, Stata, SPSS).
  • Ability to take primary responsibility for the conceptualisation, parameterisation and implementation of original decision-analytic models.
  • Ability to communicate information accurately and persuasively using a variety of presentation techniques, in accessible language to an audience of varied technical backgrounds, and sensitively to patients who have the medical condition under discussion.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and produce high-quality work to meet frequent, non-negotiable deadlines.
  • Flexible attitude to working environment and ability to work independently as well as part of a team
