Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL) is seeking to appoint a Head of Laboratory (Consultant Clinical Scientist). This is an opportunity to join a committed team of Scientists and Technologists within the lead laboratory of the South-West Genomics Laboratory Hub (SWGLH).

The successful candidate will also be expected to assume one of the senior leadership roles in the SWGLH.

BGL has a scientific and technical staff group of 150 and is housed in state of the art Pathology Services Development in North Bristol NHS Trust and is a key member of the Severn Pathology integrated Pathology Service. Integral to Severn Pathology is a fully provisioned molecular hub supporting wider Pathology testing in partnership with UK Health Security Agency.

BGL is a fully integrated Genomic Lab with staff teams structured along patient care pathways to provide comprehensive Cancer and Rare Disease Genomics in line with National Genomic Test Directory. BGL has a significant R&D programme to support Genomics developments in Rare Disease and Cancer and benefits from co-location with University of Bristol Learning and Research Centre in the Trusts Science Quarter. BGL has a close working relationship with the Exeter Genomics Laboratory and together form the SWGLH.

BGL is committed to the provision of high quality training at all levels, through Modernising Scientific Careers programmes (STP and HSST), contribution to training of other healthcare professionals and academic posts including MSc. and PhD.

Job Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for clinical direction and management of BGL to include:

  • Workforce planning
  • Planning to ensure appropriate technologies with sufficient capacity are used to meet service needs
  • Ensure service compliance with ISO 15189:2012
  • Education and Training of all staff
  • Laboratory Performance, application of best practice/national guidance and compliance with all required performance standards
  • Risk Management of the Department
  • Act in a Consultant capacity for clinical reporting of results including validation and interpretation of genomic data.
  • The post holder is expected to assume one of the senior leadership roles in the South West Genomics Laboratory Hub and work in partnership with the SW Genomic Medicine Service Alliance

The successful applicant will be:

  • Consultant Clinical Scientist with proven experience of leading and managing large scale clinical and diagnostic NHS genomic laboratory services
  • An expert within the field as evidenced by involvement in professional and/or research activities.
  • Registered with HCPC as a Clinical Scientist
  • An excellent strategic thinker with good awareness of NHS, HEE and developments in genomics
  • In possession of FRCPath or equivalent
  • Qualified to PhD or Higher Degree (desirable)
  • Skilled in communication, team working and supervisory skills
