Southampton CAMHS have an opportunity for a CAMHS Practitioner / Nurse to join us working with our Youth Offending Service. You will be working alongside an established CAMHS / YOS team at an important time in our development.

Southampton Youth Offending Service (SYOS based at Church View – 28-29 St Marys Street, Southampton, SO14 1AT) works with children from as young as 10 up to 18 years of age, that break the law. These children could have been sentenced by a court, or have come to the attention of the police but not been charged. In this case they would have their offending dealt with out of court. The YOS oversees the contract for Appropriate Adults for young people in custody but does not provide the resource ‘in house’

The SYOS works with all these young people and their victims, to try to help them live better lives, ultimately stay away from crime and attempt to provide both child and victim with a satisfactory restorative activity as part of intervention planning. With this in mind the SYOS:

  1. Facilitates Appropriate Adult assistance with children at police stations
  2. Provide support at court for both the court itself and children attending
  3. Supervise young people on a community sentence or out of court disposal
  4. Keep in contact with young people while they’re in custody and help them settle back in the community when they leave
  5. Deliver interventions to help young people make different life choices.

YOTs are statutory partnerships, that is, they must work together by law, and they are multi-disciplinary, so they can deal with the needs of the whole child. They are required to have staff from local authority social care and education services, the police, the National Probation Service and local health services working together to help these children. The service locally is hosted by the local authority. Governance arrangements come courtesy of the local disciplinary Management Board and assisted by the SYOS management team.

Workers should be aware of the relevant legislation contained in the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act and how this impacts upon their own team’s practice. Cases will normally be situated at either Level 3 or Level 4.
