Consultant Cellular Pathologist

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Cellular Pathologist, based at North Devon District Hospital.

We are pleased to offer the post of Consultant Cellular Pathologist at North Devon District Hospital. This offers an exciting opportunity to join a well-established, respected and successful team, with this a post created to both accommodate planned retirements, one of the current WTE consultants becoming part-time, and the increasing case numbers and complexity of cases seen in the department.

It’s an exciting time to join the North Devon team as we integrate with the Royal Devon & Exeter Foundation Trust (RDEFT), Implement EPIC beaker LIMS (shared instance with RDEFT) and work with partners across our network to implement digital pathology in 2022. Together we believe these changes will open up further opportunities for collaborative working and career development should that be of interest to candidates.

We have a high performing UKAS accredited laboratory which is well staffed with an entertaining and motivated workforce. There is a same day immunocytochemistry service, and the department meets all key performance targets. We aim to maintain this as part of a wider hospital network in Devon & Cornwall.

The aim of the department is to manage the workload effectively so that we report clinically urgent specimens in a timely way to meet the needs of the patient, but also to ensure our Histopathologists have a day a week which they do not take ‘new’ clinical work they can use for SPA activity and to clear difficult cases. A balanced workload and excellent work life balance is something we strive for.

North Devon Hospital is part of North Devon Healthcare Trust which provides integrated acute and community services across North Devon. The acute hospital provides a full complement of secondary care including cancer services, emergency care, maternity and paediatric services. It is a designated Cancer Unit and Trauma Unit.

North Devon offers a fantastic combination of coastline and countryside, so the famous surfing beaches of North Devon and the beautiful National Parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor are on your doorstep. Barnstaple and the surrounding area also boasts excellent local schools, tennis facilities, vibrant theatres, art and music, and abundant family opportunities.

We would welcome informal discussion with applicants, who can contact Dr Jason Davies, Dr Adetope (Femi) Adegbayibi, (Consultant Cellular Pathologists) on 01271 349197, or Mr Lee Luscombe (Pathology Service Manager) on 01271 311754,

This post is being offered as Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust continue to develop our long standing partnership with a view to becoming a single integrated organisation across Eastern and Northern Devon. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining the RD&E’s track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the university with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability.

Whilst the post holder is formally being appointed to a role within the base hospital of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, over time there may be a need to provide some clinical activity in the partner hospital site to ensure service continuity and equity of access to appropriate services.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
