Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, is a leading teaching eye hospital and is a centre of excellence for ophthalmic care, with over 35 consultant ophthalmologists who specialize in a range of sub-specialties. In 2009 the Eye Hospital moved to an impressive new purpose-built hospital.

The optometry department is a major component of the eye hospital's out-patient department providing a wide range of services including adult and paediatric refractions, low vision rehabilitation and specialist contact lenses. Optometrists are also involved in established extended roles including pre and post-operative cataract assessments, glaucoma management, macular treatments, corneal services, paediatric services (low vision and contact lenses), diabetic retinopathy services and emergency ophthalmology services.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for advanced clinical optometrists (Band 8a) to join the optometry team.

The optometrists will work collaboratively with other members of the optometry team, other healthcare professionals and consultant ophthalmologists ensuring they provide clinical excellence in the delivery of high-quality patient centred care. This expansion to the team has been made possible by investment and expansion of virtual diagnostic clinics and comprehensive ophthalmology services.

The role of advanced clinical optometrist requires a skilled autonomous clinician with highly developed ophthalmic knowledge and prescribing abilities, through a combination of prior experience and higher qualifications. They will demonstrate critical thinking in clinical decision-making processes and will play a key role in service delivery and adherence to policy and procedures. They will also be instrumental in guiding and supporting the development and practice of junior clinicians including teaching and training. The post holder will also be expected to lead on clinical audit as well as taking advantage of opportunities to be involved in research.

You will have excellent organisational skills, be a good communicator and demonstrate a caring, compassionate, and professional approach to patients and staff.

We are looking for optometrists who are innovative and creative who can share their experience and existing skills.

Experience of working in hospital ophthalmology services is desirable.
