About the Job

  • To work with the team leader and neighbourhood team of speech and language therapists to provide a high-quality speech and language therapy service to children aged 0-19 in a variety of community settings including clinics, schools, and nurseries.
  • Provide therapeutic intervention using specialist knowledge to children with a variety of speech, language, and communication difficulties.
  • Model and support less experienced clinical staff to use specialist skills in assessing children with a complex combination of communication difficulties and disabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with other partner agencies and carers to enable them to understand the communication impairment and to provide appropriate advice, support, and intervention.
  • Ensure the delivery of the quality strategy within the designated area incorporating establishment of systems and processes.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
  • HCPC Registered
  • Relevant experience of assessing, care planning and report writing
  • Assessment tools relevant to the client group.
  • National policies and procedures relevant to the client group.
  • Awareness of the principles of clinical governance/audit.
  • Awareness of standards of record keeping.
  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically.

What will be your main responsibilities?

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide, in- depth assessment, differential diagnosis, signposting, intervention and modelling, report writing and review of Specialist Speech and Language Therapy treatment and discharge in a timely manner.
  • Make appropriate referrals to Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapists and other health, education and social care professionals and complete peer review and combined decision making to develop care plans.
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness.
  • Provide comprehensive and timely reports for Statutory assessment process, standard service reports and participate in annual reviews as required.
  • Be responsible for the security, care and maintenance of equipment ensuring standards of infection control and safety are maintained – including equipment loaned to client.


  • Manage and prioritise own workload and a defined caseload.
  • Maintain all contacts and activity via the appropriate recording system.
  • Recognise potential breakdown and conflict when it occurs and seek advice and support to resolve this.

Training & Education

  • Attend relevant training and development to maintain skills and knowledge required of a therapist working in the field of communication disorders and maintain up to date HCPC and RCSLT registration.
  • Develop a working knowledge of relevant procedures including Safeguarding children, Special Educational Needs procedures, and other legal frameworks.
  • Keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good practice in early diagnostic intervention, specific language impairment and relevant clinical areas.

Clinical Governance/Research and Audit

  • Maintain case notes and therapy goal and care plans in clients’ case files, in accordance with professional guidelines.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to, RCSLT professional and clinical and National and Local guidelines.


  • Communicate effectively with clinical teams both multi-disciplinary and uni-disciplinary by discussing own and others’ input around clients’ needs, ensuring a well-coordinated care plan.
  • Write and produce reports regarding the child’s needs, child’s progress, recommendations, and summary of proposed care plans.
