We have an exciting opportunity that has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Health Play Specialist to join the brand new ‘Project Tooth Fairy’ team.


‘Project Tooth Fairy’ has been commissioned by NHS England, working with North Thames and South Thames Paediatric Networks in response to the growing paediatric waiting times across London which has been further compounded by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The project aims to combat waiting times by providing additional paediatric dental capacity that will be available to trusts across London and the surrounding local areas. The project will deliver three dental procedure rooms which are expected to be operational by October 2021 and will be based at the Royal London Dental Hospital –Barts Health NHS Trust. This role will treat patients from both Barts Health and other trusts dependant on need. This additional capacity will be appropriate for non-complex paediatric day-case procedures only, for patients that are aged between 2-16 years old, who do not have any complex comorbidities.


‘Project Tooth Fairy’ have recognised the need for Play Specialist expertise and support for these paediatric patients requiring dental procedures under general anaesthetic. Funding for 2 Play Specialists is available for an 18 month Fixed Term contract until 31st March 2023. Between them they will be covering a 6 day service (Monday-Saturday), so will be expected to work 2 Saturdays in every 4 week period. They will both be working clinically to cover the theatre lists. The Band 5 ‘Project Tooth Fairy’ Play Specialist will be supported by the Band 6 Advanced Play Specialist, alongside the Play Department Clinical Lead. They will be joining a friendly and experienced team of Play Specialists and Play Workers based across The Royal London Hospital.


This role has been funded through the support and recognition of the importance of play from the wider MDT. This a great chance to highlight the role that play makes within a service. The candidate will work with the MDT to look at the dental lists, assess what support patients need, and keep accurate and up to date patient records. As it is a new role we are looking for someone who is able to work on their own initiative, be interested in project work and improving the service. The ideal candidate will also be enthusiastic about teaching and sharing best practice. The Foundation Degree in ‘Healthcare Play Specialism’, Edex/BTEC in ‘Specialised Play for the Sick Child’ or the previous HPSC/HPSEB, or international equivalent, is a requirement for this post along with current registration with HPSET.
