Cancer care is one of the top three strategic priorities for UCLH. Our vision is to become Europe’s premier Cancer centre. An ambitious programme of transformation and investment underpins this vision. Highlights include the centralisation of complex care across north and east London to UCLH encompassing haemato-oncology, urology, head & neck, neuro-oncology and upper GI, and building a new hospital containing 135 haematology beds, 10 theatres, leading edge imaging and the nationally commissioned Proton Beam Therapy Service.

Department overview

UCLH is situated in the Heart of London’s west end with easy access by all forms of public transport.

Radiotherapy services at UCLH will be delivered across two departments. The existing photon department is situated in the basement of the Podium (P-2) at University College Hospital. UCLH has been designated as one of two national Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) centres for the UK and will be one of two sites delivering PBT across the NHS. The PBT department is situated in the new phase 4 building.

The photon department opened in 2005 and has four Varian TrueBeam systems with advanced imaging packages, two of the Truebeams are equipped with 6 DoF couches. The department boasts a comprehensive brachytherapy suite and a Gulmay skin unit. Around 2000 patients access the service annually. The PBT department has four Varain Probeam proton therapy systems. Once fully established, this service will treat up to 750 NHS patients and up to 250 privately funded patients a year. Each department has a pre-treatment suite. Both departments have a dedicated CT scanner and the PBT department also has a dedicated MRI scanner.

The department delivers radiotherapy services for a broad spectrum of cancers comprising of common cancers as well as specialist treatments including a paediatric and adolescent workload, brachytherapy and isotope work, total body irradiation and sarcoma, neurological and head and neck radiotherapy. The department is delivering SABR, as well as being designated as the main centre in the south for cranial SRS. There are also close relationships with the academic department in nuclear medicine and the academic department of oncology, which has a major research interest in targeted molecular radiotherapy.

The Role

This role offers an opportunity to be part of the radiotherapy team at UCLH and is a rotational post covering a wide range of areas within the Radiotherapy service covering pre-treatment, treatment-prep, treatment units and brachytherapy.
