Band 4 - Cancer Support Worker

FIXED TERM - 2 years

We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a full time Macmillan cancer support workers to work within our cancer nursing and support worker team. (Part time working will be considered)

This role is pivotal to providing support to cancer patients and their families. It involves triaging and escalating concerns to facilitate cancer patients through cancer pathways and treatment programmes.

The role requires a knowledge or willingness to work with hospital systems, cancer care and a multidisciplinary team.

Excellent communication skills are essential in providing support to individuals affected by cancer and their families including the ability to manage level 1 psychological distress and recognise and escalate level 2 psychological distress. Ability to demonstrate a compassionate approach and to provide empathy with patients who may be experiencing a difficult time in their life is essential.

The Cancer Teams at Ashford and St Peter’s are friendly, dynamic and supportive. Multi-disciplinary working with the Cancer and Palliative Care Nursing Team and cancer services is vital to provide informed and timely response and care to patients, carers and health professionals

The posts are Macmillan fixed term funded (2 years) and expectations of the role require understanding of Macmillan values and enabling available support, information and resources for cancer patients. Macmillan requires evaluation and service review and this is expected within the delivery of this role

A commitment to further improving services for cancer patients and their families is essential. A desire and willingness to undertake further study is required and an understanding of National and local policies and strategies is required.
