Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion.

Rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC for the second consecutive time in 2019, we have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.

We’re also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 1.84 million patients ‘contacts’ each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.

Newcastle Hospitals are proud to be one of the exemplar organisations across the NHS on sustainability, with a long history of delivering Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) and the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. Our strategy includes commitments to being Net Zero by 2030, for our direct carbon footprint, and Net Zero by 2040 for our footprint plus. Delivering these ambitions will not be possible without the help, support and action of every single member of our team.

The Great North Children’s Hospital based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) is one of only 14 major Children’s Medical Centres in the United Kingdom. It has 245 beds and is the home of specialities that include paediatric intensive care, gastroenterology, renal medicine, respiratory, rheumatology, endocrinology, surgery, immunology, neurology, oncology and infectious diseases. We are also one of only two specialist units in the UK who treat children with immunodeficiency disease.

We have clinical pharmacy input into many areas; assist and lead on guideline writing and join in consultant led ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings and working closely alongside specialist nurses to facilitate homecare prescriptions.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a keen pharmacist to join the paediatric pharmacy team. The post holder will work primarily in the area of Paediatric Intensive Unit (PICU) ward, and rotate between the Great North Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital. Full training will be provided and the post holder will work alongside the Senior Lead Pharmacist for Paediatric Intensive Care. We provide a well-established pharmacy-led service in the provision of paediatric total parenteral nutrition (TPN) to children on the wards and the post holder will be trained up to order paediatric TPN. Training into other areas of paediatrics will also be provided.

The post holder will also input into the care of women under the care of our obstetrics and gynaecology teams at Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The post holder will work closely with other areas of pharmacy including Pharmacy Production Unit, Medicines Management and the Homecare Team.

We have a very good relationship with the School of Pharmacy at Newcastle University; we host undergrad student placements on our paediatric wards and work with the team on research and audit projects. If the post holder is interested in pursuing research this will be actively supported and encouraged.

We require a motivated and enthusiastic team-player to join our friendly team. Previous experience in paediatrics is desirable, but not essential as training will be provided and the post holder will be supported by experienced and senior paediatric pharmacists.

Full Time 37 hours 30 minutes/week
