The Service: Work Well

At Work Well, we work to support people with mental health problems in achieving their own career goals. We believe everyone can work, and people should have choice about the type of work they want to do, and when to do it. Our vision for the future is a society where everyone can work, if they want to.

We currently employ over 40 employment professionals, including employment specialists, senior employment specialists, and employment team leaders. We have a wide range of expertise and our strong links with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) enables us to continually find new and improved ways to support people with mental health problems into employment.

The Team: Southwark Works

You will be joining a brand-new team of employment specialists as part of the highly successful Southwark Works programme. Southwark Works is an initiative commissioned by Southwark Council to help local people overcome barriers to work. The new team will work as part of a network of employment support services, who all work closely together to increase access to job opportunities for people living in the London Borough of Southwark.

The role: Employment Specialist

As an employment specialist at Work Well, you will be responsible for helping unemployed people with mental health problems to find work. This includes:

  • Working closely with clients to identify their barriers to work and develop solutions to help them find work quickly.
  • Communicating and engaging with local employers to identify suitable job opportunities.
  • Managing your own diary and workload under minimal supervision, being flexible and adapting to change in uncertain times.
  • Working with mental health professionals, support organisations, family members and carers when necessary to help clients get the support they need for returning to work.
  • Keeping clear and accurate records of the work you do using digital technology.
  • Working to agreed performance targets and quality standards, continually evaluating your own progress and working to achieve the highest possible standards in your work.
  • Learning from others and sharing your knowledge and expertise with colleagues within Work Well and across the Southwark Works network.

The location: London Borough of Southwark

The team is currently based at the Maudsley Hospital, less than 5 minutes from Denmark Hill train station (zone 2). The role will involve a mixture of:

  • home-based working (communicating via phone and email, and using video software such as Microsoft Teams),
  • office-based working (according to Covid-19 guidelines), and
  • working in the community (Southwark and surrounding area when necessary).
