Our Organisation

NHS England and NHS Improvement came together on 1 April 2019 as a new single organisation. The NHS Long Term Plan focuses on delivering integrated care to patients at the local level and we can best support the NHS to deliver this as a single integrated organisation.

At the NHS, we are reminded every day of how important life is. As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement whether that’s job share, part time or another flexible pattern. In addition, although the role advertised may have an ‘home’ office base indicated, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Our new operating model represents a strong shift to regional delivery supported by expert corporate teams. Local health systems are supported by our integrated regional teams who play a major leadership role in the geographies they manage.

We are jointly committed to creating and maintaining a fair and supportive working environment and culture, where contributions are fully recognised and valued by all and staff feel empowered to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities. As employers we are committed to promoting and protecting the physical and mental health and well-being of all our staff. This underpins our values as set out in the NHS Constitution, supports us to be an Employer of Choice and ultimately enables our employees to support the effective care of our patients.

The NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS), approved by the NHS England Board in March 2017, is world leading through the introduction of cutting-edge genomic technologies, including whole genome sequencing into routine care in the NHS.

The NHS GMS builds upon the NHS contribution to the 100,000 Genomes Project and is central to the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan commitments on genomics. The NHS GMS will encompass establishing genomics in routine clinical care and ongoing genomic projects, including those emerging from the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy (LSIS) and research both nationally and internationally.

The Pharmacy Genomics Lead will be responsible within the GU for developing and implementing the pharmacogenomic workstreams which will support the systematic embedding of the NHS GMS.

The Pharmacy Genomics Lead will work to harness the potential of the pharmacy workforce to utilise the full opportunities of the NHS GMS, reporting into the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, who will oversee the NHS England’s approach to personalised medicine and pharmacogenomics, in conjunction with the Chief Scientific Officer, who will oversee implementation of the NHS GMS.

The framework to embed genomics into pharmacy practice focuses on four key pillars:

  • Leadership and implementation through the GMS Alliances and national Pharmacy Genomics Advisory Group
  • Policy and strategy for pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine, led by the NHSEI Genomics Unit
  • Workforce Development for the pharmacy profession, led by the Joint HEE and NHSEI Pharmacy Workforce Group for Genomics
  • Clinical Professional Networks supported by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, UKCPA and other key stakeholders

The Pharmacy Genomics Lead will:

  • Support the development of a long-term strategy for the implementation of pharmacogenomics in the NHS, including a framework for evaluating benefits to the system and an implementation plan;
  • Support the development of evidence to support the inclusion of pharmacogenomic testing in the 20/21 National Genomic Test Directory, with a full impact and value assessment to enable recommendations to be considered by the commissioning system;
  • Support the work of the NHS England working group for Pharmacogenomics and its evolution to ensure it is fit for purpose in the future, under the new proposals for genomic test evaluation;
  • Develop a priority list of Pharmacogenomic gene drug combinations that should be prioritised beyond 20/21;
  • Engage with HEE and the pharmacist community and identify workforce and other service related issues;
  • Develop a national network of pharmacists with expertise in pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine to support implementation of pharmacogenomics policy and strategy;
  • Contribute to the overall stakeholder and clinical and professional leadership development and communications in this area;
  • Support pharmacy professionals to be fully integrated into the NHS GMS, through effective MDT working, referral mechanisms and sign-posting;
  • Engage with key strategic regional and national policy makers to inform development of strategy and policies.
