Specialty Doctor in Acute Paediatrics

The Northern Devon Healthcare Trust is seeking to appoint a permanent Specialty Doctor in Paediatrics. We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to proactively contribute to the department. The department is small and friendly with good links to the local tertiary services and provides exciting opportunities as well as the challenges of healthcare in a rural area.

The appointee will take part in a full shift middle grade rota also participated in by five newly appointed Consultants and our Speciality trainees. This post consists of 10 + 2 Programmed Activities (PAs). There is flexibility within the rota and allocated PAs to allow development of areas of specialist interest, either to attend additional clinics or postgraduate qualifications.

UK experience in paediatrics or experience in a service broadly equivalent to that delivered in a UK paediatric function is highly desirable and must include neonatal experience.

The post holder will have responsibility for both General Paediatrics and Neonatology and will have the opportunity to undertake any relevant training and attend courses to maintain continuing professional development. The role also involves participation in clinical audit, and teaching of other grades and medical students.

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust serves a population of 150,000, the influx of holiday-makers causing a significant rise in the summer months. Paediatric in-patient services are provided on the 12 bed Caroline Thorpe Ward, plus the admissions unit and a 2 bedded HDU. There is also a level 1 SCBU with eight cots. All the main medical, surgical, maternity and psychiatric specialties are also provided for in the hospital and there is comprehensive pathology and radiology service. Caroline Thorpe Ward recently won the “Team of the Year” in the regional Paediatric awards..

North Devon is one of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom to live. There are many outstanding surfing beaches and diverse countryside including moor land, downs, valleys and rugged cliffs thus providing varied recreation opportunities. There are good schools, both LEA and private.

Interested applicants may contact Dr Helen Sammons, Clinical Lead on 01271 311853 or Dr Dermot Dalton, College Tutor on 01271 322577.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
