Applications are invited for a whole-time Locum Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine.

This is a new post which will give an exciting opportunity to develop rehabilitation services in Leicester by enhancing the current establishment of Rehabilitation Medicine consultant staff under the Department of Neurology. Our in-patient services cover the whole population of East Midlands and out-patient service cover Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland with a catchment population of around 1 million.

This post is due expansion of Neuro-rehabilitation bed base at Leicester General Hospital which has got 2 specialist neuro-rehabilitation inpatient units. Leicester Brain Injury Unit is the only Level 1 Specialist Rehabilitation Unit for East Midlands and Specialist Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit is Level 2a service. Brain Injury Unit is the first ward in UHL to achieve blue status (Caring at its Best) while Specialist Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit is working towards achieving blue status.

Leicester Specialist Rehabilitation Service has completed the Psychometric validation study of the Spasticity Quality of Life 6-Dimensions (SQOL-6D) in upper-limb spasticity- a multicentre research in rehabilitation. Full support will be provided by UHL to Consultants in pursuing their research interest.

It is also expected that this post holder will provide substantial input in to the community neuro-rehabilitation team. In addition to routine neuro-rehabilitation and spasticity clinics, the post holder will have the opportunity to develop special interest clinics.

This is an exciting time for specialist Neuro-Rehabilitation Services in Leicester which are expanding and offering specialist rehabilitation to patients from whole East Midlands. Due to re-organisation of services at University Hospitals of Leicester Specialist Rehabilitation a service have been given opportunity to reconfigure and is already working innovative ways offering specialist rehabilitation with recently purchased specialist equipment to enhance delivery of physical and cognitive rehabilitation. Spasticity clinics have been revamped and expanded at UHL and in the process of rolling it out across Leicestershire.
