Senior Pharmacy Technician Dispensary Patient Services Band 5 - fixed term maternity cover

Are you a registered pharmacy technician looking for a new challenge and a chance to expand your knowledge and skills, as well as development in a management role? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Pharmacy Technician at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, working in the inpatient dispensary.

This is a Band 5 role however we may accept applications from candidates without the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification to join us as a Band 4 with the expectation that they would complete the ACPT. On completion of this the candidate would be moved to a Band 5.


The Pharmacy department has more than a hundred staff, with the inpatient dispensary at the hub. Being part of a Trust with a CQC Outstanding rating means that we are continually working to improve our services to our patients. As one of only five trusts in the country to be selected for the NHS partnership with Virginia Mason in the US, we have developed a ‘lean’ culture within the pharmacy so are always looking for better ways of working.

Our pharmacy department has a strong emphasis on training and development. The Trust is an Associated University Teaching Hospital, linked to Brighton and Sussex Medical School. The pharmacy department works closely with Health Education London and South East to deliver training, as well as the Universities of Brighton and Medway. Additionally we have links with other Trusts, managing Guy’s and St Thomas’ patients in our Lane Fox Unit and working with The Royal Surrey to care for our cancer patients.


We have a friendly and developing team of pharmacy technicians, pharmacists and pharmacy assistants who work alongside a number of trainee pharmacy technicians and pharmacists. The dispensary is a busy environment, with the primary aim of providing safe and timely supplies of medicines for inpatient use, medicines to take home and controlled drugs stocks.


Supported by the Dispensary Supervisor and Lead Technician for Patient Services, your main role will be to supervise and support the day to day running of the dispensary.

Some of your duties will include:

  • co-ordinating the dispensary workflow
  • final accuracy checking of prescriptions
  • staff training
  • overseeing safe and accurate controlled drugs procedures
  • rota planning
  • assisting in the investigation of incidents and stock discrepancies
  • line management of pharmacy assistants


The most important skills and qualities needed for this role are leadership, communication, problem solving and attention to detail as well as someone who is a role model to others by displaying the Trust Values.

The post holder will need to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council with experience of working in pharmacy. Whilst hospital experience is preferred, it is not essential.
