Team Leader (Senior Biomedical Scientist).


Applications are invited from HCPC registered experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientists with an MSc, FIBMS or equivalent. The ideal candidate must have a wide experience of all aspects of Microbiology diagnostic testing (in Bacteriology and/or VSM (Virology, Molecular and Serology) as well as service delivery experience and have excellent interpersonal skills. Additional qualities that the department seek are a well-developed understanding of Health and safety, UKAS and quality within a clinical laboratory, a drive and determination to improve laboratory processes.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic, friendly and well-motivated individual who has a strong team ethic as well as good performance as an individual.

The Role:

Working under the leadership of a Deputy Service Manager, the Team Leader role is critical to the successful operations of the service. The role encompasses management the laboratory based team within the department, which will require specialist knowledge pertaining to the department. In particular the role is designed to fulfil the following functions:

To organise the day to day operational management of a section of the laboratory. Ensuring optimal performance of equipment, materials and staff.

To provide professional leadership and line management for the staff across the department, this includes work planning and rosters, training and mentoring, performance management and other HR issues.

As a Team Leader, to provide appropriate specialist advice on technical and scientific issues within the post holder’s area of expertise to the Deputy Service Manager / General Manager.

As part of a team to help deliver additional service related roles within the areas of Training, Quality and Service Improvement.

The Clinical Microbiology Department:


The Clinical Microbiology laboratory at Leicester is a comprehensive 24/7 medical microbiology service handling around 750,000 microbiology and virology samples per year. We are active in supporting infection prevention, control & diagnostics of a wide range of infections. The laboratory is UKAS accredited. Teaching, training, audit, research and development are actively encouraged and pursued within the department. The laboratory is approved by the IBMS and fully supports continuing professional development.
