Consultant in Acute Medicine

The COVID pandemic has highlighted the importance of our local environment. We consider ourselves very fortunate in Devon to have space and natural beauty on our doorstep. If you are looking to make a positive change in your life, then we are looking for consultant colleagues to join our team in Acute Medicine in North Devon. You will be joining a team of forward thinking doctors in a dynamic trust, able to effect changes in our service.

Our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) project is our way of innovating care. We wish
to expand this service, which is how these new jobs arise. As a consultant group we value family life and so promote part time working, plus diverse portfolios, to make our jobs balanced and sustainable.

North Devon is a great place to live and bring up a family. We have outdoor appeal with our beautiful national parks and coastline. Local beaches such as Woolacombe and Saunton stretch as far as the eye can see. The area offers some of the best surfing and watersports in the country and polls highly as one of the UK’s best places to live.

NDDH has a small sized Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) of 26 beds and a newly developed SDEC area. Here we offer rapid access to diagnostics and procedures. Suitable patients are processed by experienced middle grade doctors and Advanced Care Practitioners. We are building our percentage of patients though same day care; this is where these new roles come in.

Please contact us on 01271 370202 if you have any questions or would like to have an informal discussion about the role.

We are committed to offering genuinely workable job plans, recognising that Acute Medicine is a challenging specialty. We have strong links with University of Exeter Medical School and a new association with Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. These bring many non-clinical opportunities to make this a reality.

If you wish to negotiate a job plan combining specialty work with Acute Medicine, then please do get in touch.

This post is being offered as Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust continue to develop our long standing partnership with a view to becoming a single integrated organisation across Eastern and Northern Devon. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining the RD&E’s track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the university with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability.

Whilst the post holder is formally being appointed to a role within the base hospital of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, over time there may be a need to provide some clinical activity in the partner hospital site to ensure service continuity and equity of access to appropriate services.

The Government has formally announced that it intends to introduce regulations that will require most healthcare workers to be fully vaccinated (1st and 2nd dose) against COVID-19 by 1st April 2022. To achieve this the successful applicant must have had their 1stCOVID-19 vaccination by   3rd February 2022. Therefore, full COVID-19 vaccination will be a condition of employment unless an individual is medically exempt. We will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
